What's so amazing about doing a takeoff, going to the back for a few hours nap time, and when you wake up...wow, you're on the other side of the world!!

Good luck to all who are trying to get on at Atlas...

Warning: this kind of flying is NOT for everyone. If you think a four-day trip is too long...

DON'T APPLY FOR THIS JOB...It is NOT for you.

For guys like JT400 (and me, and many others), it is perfect.

Again, good luck for those that want this kind of flying, Atlas is not a bad gig.

JT400

Congrats on finishing IOE! It was a pleasure flying with you on the ANC-DNA-OSN legs. Cheers,

Can you folks explain how this basing and gateway thing works. Some say you are home based but I say that there are set bases like JFK, LAX, etc. How would it work if you live in lets say Dallas.
Thnx.

Updraft,

Say you are based in JFK. Some trips start out of JFK but many do not so the first leg (and normally the first day) is a deadhead to where the plane is. I'm JFK based but live in the other half of DFW and try to bid trips that don't start in New York. Next month I start in HSV. The pattern shows travel and deadhead pay from JFK to ATL to HSV on the first day. What will happen is I'll get a ticket DFW to HSV.

If the flying started in JFK I'd still get a ticket to JFK but it would most likely be on day zero before the first day of flying. Atlas would pay for the hotel that night. Atlas treats a ticket to your base and hotel rooms there at the beginning and end of a pattern (some exceptions) as imputed income so if the ticket was 100 dollars and the Five Towns was another 100they would withhold ~30 dollars for the ticket plus ~30 for the hotel.

I've had some trips that start with a limo from JFK to WRI or DOV. The company has been good about buying a ticket to PHL and setting up the limo from there with no tax issues.

Same thing at the end of the pattern. It may fly into JFK or you may have a deadhead leg to your base. If it's a DH, the company will normally buy you a ticket home from your last operating leg.

Yes, we have bases. Basically if you live in or near a medium sized city, when they need you to leave your house, (including to your base) you will be bought airline tickets, hotels, and per diem.

I don't mean to be condescending, but if you are going to try and get hired here you are going to have to read this thread, all of it. All your answers are in there.

After you are done, decide if you AND YOUR FAMILY will enjoy (can live with) the lifestyle.

Good luck.

I fully agree with whaledriver...

If you are serious about this job (this particular job and all that it entails), please do yourself (and the guy that didn't get the job because you did and you quit after just a few months because you couldn't put up with this job) a favor and

READ THIS ENTIRE THREAD...yes, I'm yelling. But read this entire thread...oh, and btw, read this entire thread.

Oh yeah, and read this entire thread...ok?!!

Like I said a couple of posts ago, this job is NOT for everyone. And you need to be properly informed about this before taking the plunge.

Don't get me wrong. I have worked for the biggest commuters, ACMI's, major sked service, BUT - for me, this is the best job I have ever had.

It is what it is, but much more importantly, it IS NOT the other thing.

Thank you very much for your responses.

Currently I do pretty much the same kind of flying on the same airplane as you guys but a hell of lot more days on the road. Been doing that for the past 5 yrs, so the family is acclimated. I just didn't know the nuances of your commuting arrangements.

But you know what.....................I think I will READ THE ENTIRE THREAD .
