Seven days, hah! You're on the hook for 17 days a month. If you live in ANC, MIA or JFK and can swing it, you might get some less than a week lines. MIA especially does a bunch of down and back. But they are very up front in the interview, they run planes around the world and you should plan on being gone 17 days a month. You might be able to split that into 2 patterns. But if you're junior and end up working the later part of one month and get the first part of the next month, well you could be on the road a while. Getting home from Denver for a couple days is one thing, getting back from Hong Kong is totally different. Twenty four hours of deadheading to get home, I only want to do that once a month.

All that being said, I've only been on the road 14 days the last couple of months but I do that in one chunk.

What's your seniority? I can handle 17 days in one "pattern" (I actually prefer it), but am curious what kind of respect the pilots get from the company with regard to getting extended? I don't care if you're single or in a relationship and have children, getting extended for up to 40+ days is hard on one's lifestyle and can make an otherwise good job a stepping stone. Thank you.

STN used to be a base for new hires and the only way to get the company to pay for your ticket and hotel was to waive your right to two days off between trips and agree to 17 working days in a row.

Today you can still agree to the waiver and 17 days in a row but it is up to crew planning if they will award it to you or not. The two most likely scenarios for you to be working more than 17 days in a row is first working the monthly transition and second is involuntary extension. The latter can only be up to four days under certain conditions. It's up to you to ask why or just roll over and assume it's ok. Anything more than four days is pilot induced.

The Polar/Atlas contract is now going to an arbitrator and hopefully it will be in effect by spring '11.

I'm real junior, was hired just before they stopped hirring in 08. The comments were mainly for Avien, if you're looking for a three on, four off, four on, three off job, Atlas is not for you. I've not had two months run together and never been extended. In fact the company spent about my month's pay to get me home without going into 18 days for this month.

Atlas sounds like a great opportunity. Unfortunately, I have very young kids and I can't be away for 17 days at a time for that very reason. Thanks for the information. Perhaps in a couple of years if they are still hiring.

Does anyone know if Dave Kilian is still with Polar/Atlas (B747CA)? We flew together 21 years ago!

I logged back in and no courses were listed. I took the test a few weeks ago. Has anyone else had that happen?

I have been with the company for about 2.5 years, including furlough, and I have never been backed to backed. I can tell you that you will spend at least 1 or 2 days of month traveling on your own time if you do not live near your base. It is a fact of life here. You will also spend an enormous amount of time dead heading. I went LAX-JFK-DXB to start work this month...

Pattern changes are the norm, not the exception. Save yourself a lot of grief and remain semper gumby, and don't let gossip get you down, etc.

I have requested 17 days straight every month this year to no avail....

Rhinoflyer,

What did you study for the test and was it useful?

Thanks
