Is the 777 that well staffed or is the rumored certificate merger actually going to happen and the company anticipates people swapping fleets?

It’s not a merger, Southern will cease to exist 11/17.

The "can only hire 1 per class" is a red herring. My friend wanted the 777, they said they have very limited spots available and gave him a 747 class.

I’m starting class soon and I was curious about how the blended seniority list will work for airframes. Will 737 pilots that have seniority that bid 747 be ahead of me in seniority?

Yes - Same as every other airline. You get your seniority number on the day you show up for class - doesn't matter what equipment.

I don’t know how well staffed the 777 is…but Atlas doesn’t ever plan a class of 1. That’s just all they could get in that class.

The Southern certificate will be surrendered after the SOC process is complete. Then all pilots and aircraft will be on the Atlas certificate, with the exception of some of the aircraft that are currently on the Polar certificate due to route authorities.

After SOC there will be a lot of people moving to different fleets. This is partly because of new aircraft available to them with more desirable routes, cities, etc. and partly because seat locks are down to 18 months from 3 years.

All 2500+ pilots currently at Atlas/Southern will be senior to you, as well as some or all of your class depending on your SSN. Seniority is determined by the last 4. Lower is more senior.

I guess that was a dumb question. For the guys that are on the line, are there a lot 73/76/77 pilots that plan on bidding 747 when the SL officially merge? My concern is that I’ll get stuck at the bottom for a long time

I'm guessing if anything, it'll be 737 pilots bidding off to go elsewhere - not solely to 747 though. For a while they were flying about 10-15 hours a month. I think it's up from that now, but if they have some bit of desire to go fly internationally, well, it won't be on that airframe.

Also 747 consistently has the most pilots in class so I wouldn't worry too much about people swapping on top of you.

Lines on the 73 are back to 35-50h. I know a few guys that enjoy and will stay on this fleet, but probably 60-70% will bid a different one, that's my guess. I'm for sure bidding 747/777. Gotta give the international thingy a try, and if I don't like it....I'll come back to the domestic fleets when the seat locks allow me to.
Training department is going to stay busy for a while
