Cool Interview Preparation Guide June 2015

Hi y'all here's some more good stuff from this forum and some new hires and those of us who have interviewed the 9th of June

ATLAS TECH SIDE:

Scenario-based 30 minute interview questions started with the Cincinnati airport diagram. He started with a situation that tower gave new winds. You are the captain and the first officer would like to put his head down to program the FMS but you have 2 runway crossings to do and a turn to make. What would you say to the first officer?

Once you arrive at the departure runway he asked what kind of signs you would see? Runway designation sign & the ILS critical area.

What is the weather required to hold short of the ILS critical area?

He then asked to hear a take of briefing as if you were the captain.

There were several questions related to balanced field.

What is the screen height for a wet runway and what is the screen height for a dry runway?

Are fields always balanced?

Can VCMG be higher than V1?

Decipher a METAR and TAF (both US and International)

Then decipher a METAR from Brussels. (Visibility is reported in meters)

He also pulled out an VNAV/ LNAV approach into Germany and he asked where the missed approach points were and why they were different.

Jeppesen IAPs – how is the FAF identified for precision and non-precision approach?

Outside the FAF and WX goes below mins, what are your options? Options inside the FAF?

MSA circle – define it and what clearance does it give you?

Looking at the mins for this ILS at XYZ airport, a NOTAM indicates GS OTS, what are your mins?

Read this METAR & TAF?

Define QFE, QNE, and QNH?

Difference between transition altitude vs. transition level?

NAT tracks – SLOP procedures?

WX deviation procedures?

Emergency & contingency procedures?

Take-off performance – define Vmcg? V1?

Can Vmcg be greater than V1?

For a dry RWY, what is the standard height the aircraft have to be at by EOR considering performance calculations?

What if it is a wet RWY?

What is the standard climb gradient in ft/nm during initial departure phase?

After take-off, what must you climb to before initiating any turn?

International NOTAMs – here is a list… what is the Airport for these 4 letter identifiers?

Bonus question: WX associated with ILS critical area – when do you automatically stop short of the Instrument Hold Short Line?

What is SLOP?

What are the procedures for deviation on the Oceanic Tracks?

What did you use to study?http://www.ibac.org/Files/CNSATM/Lib....pdf
How wide are the tracks?

Jepp Charts: Where is the final approach fix?

What is MSA?

How about in mountainous terrain (1000' regardless)

Know your jepp charts

Read an international notam.

Read international TAF.

What is screen height?

Climb segments?

Climb gradient required?

****************

What is the holding speed at 5000', 7500', 14,000'+ ?

On approach plate what are the min. to land?

What are the Min to file as an alt.

What alt. is the FAF @? pulled out several different approach plates

What does the MSA circle protect you from?

What are red circles on Airport Diagram? Hot spots

Read International Notams and WX

What is the diff. between Becoming and Tempo?

How do you get off NAT Tracks?

What is BCFG stand for in WX report?

How long is a TAF good for?

***********

Lost comms on the arrival….There was a note on the plate.

When can you descend on a precision vs a non- precision approach.

Runway light questions. Centerline lights went to red/white 3k, red last 1k. Edge lights go to yellow last 2k

What is TCH (looking at Jepp chart)? Threshold Crossing Height

What are the minimums if the Glideslope goes out? Localizer Minimums/MDA

3:1 descent planning; You're at 30,000' how far out will you start your descent? 90 miles no wind

Decode a messy METAR, low vis and precip

When do you need an alternate?

When do you need second alternate?

When do you need a take off alternate? wx at departure apt below landing mins

What does this symbol mean? (Star with circle in it on diagram) Flyover Waypoint

What does ARP mean? (on airport diagram) Airport Reference point

What’s the landing distance for LAHSO?

computed landing distance to stop prior to the crossing runway
ALD- Available Landing Distance is reported by tower and/or airport publications and NOTAMS. It is calculated by measurement from the end of the TDZ to the point at which you will be required to completely (and safely) stop on the runway.

Why would you need to not do a LAHSO other than landing distance?

If your company OPS SPECS will not allow it. It is pilot's discretion to accept them in all instances. Also, need 1000'/3mi, dry runway, no tailwind. Air carriers are required to have crews trained in LASHO to participate/ Ops. Specs must outline and allow LAHSO. Particular airports may not qualify.

What is the Difference between green and blue?

Green lights indicate taxiway centerline lighting; Blue lights indicate normal taxiway lighting. A common clearance might be to "taxi on the greens".

What does the maltese cross mean? Final Approach fix for a non-precision app

DME fixes, how do we identify them?

When can u descend below your DA? Runway env in sight or down to 100 HAT

Does a 100 foot ceiling make this a problem for shooting the approach?

No flying approaches need visibility only
This depends on the category of approach in use, and the CAT status of the aircraft and crew.

What are some alt and destination fuel requirements for flag carriers?

Your chief pilot and captain are talking and you're not getting all the checklist done and the tower clears you for take off... what do u do?

Tell the tower that you need some time on the runway before you can take-off in order to complete your check-list.

Remind them, very tactfully, that there is a sterile cockpit rule on
ground during taxi, and that we as a crew are falling behind. Inform
ATC that you will need time if what u have left will leave u rushed.

Brief an approach.
- VOR-A Brussels

Why is the approach referred to as a VOR-A when it's straight-in?

Why is is a there a DH for a VOR?

Is this a precision approach?

If your company Ops Specs allow, you can shoot this approach as a self-contained precision approach by programming the correct perimeters into your FMS.

I have no answer for why it was called a VOR-A and had no circling minimums, however.

(VOR-A) is a circling only approach; there will be no straight-in landing minimums published because:

The final approach course alignment with the runway exceeds 30 degrees

The descent gradient is > 400’/nm from the FAF to the TCH.

Define Balanced Field Length

Define V1

V2

Vmcg

Vr

First out of the box was a balanced field length question.

Define SLOP

Which way to turn and what to do with a lost comm situation?

Procedure for a weather deviation, which direction to descend or climb and what the radio station names were.

He pulled out an arrival into Miami and asked me why radar was required and what the proper procedure was for lost comms.

He asked where I would hold if I did hold and at what point I would leave that point.

There were also some pics of a hold short line and I know he was asking about which was the right light to stop at

Obstacle clearance distances on a DME arc

Compare assumed temperature method and derated thrust method of reduced power takeoffs J bonus J

What's the relationship between Vmcg and V1?

What are the four segments of the climb?

What's the main reason for using a derate takeoff?

What's the procedure for diverting off track in the North Atlantic?

What's the procedure for a weather deviation in the North Atlantic without a clearance?

What's the FAF on an ILS?

What's the FAF on a LOC approach?

Can you fly the ILS 32R at ORD if ORD VOR is out of service? Why or why not?

Read an international METAR/TAF.
Read an international NOTAM.

If you're on a DME arc, how many miles from the arc are you protected from terrain?

Technical and operational differences between CAT2 and CAT3 approaches

Brief the BRU rwy 25 departure procedure and approach plate

ICAO Holding speeds

rwy lights spacing both US & ICAO

approach lights spacing on ALSF 1 & 2

Wow, nice summary of the questions from the last two days...paying it forward, nicely done.

(And proves to me that I would not have been hired if I had to go through that!!)

Does anyone know where the Australian watch shop in Hong Kong is located? The one with "free drinks" (as a point of reference)? Not looking to booze it up, but I am possibly in the market for a new watch. Thx

Ok maybe I will do that. I thought I saw one of our guys post something about it earlier on this thread. Maybe I was mistaken...

Many thanks! Hopefully my next HKG layover isn't messed with by our illustrious Skeds/crew planning folks. Cheers.

Thanks for the technical questions... lots of studying to do, most of those (I think) I know by heart... but that they're being asked in an interview like this gives me some pause... are they looking for very specific definitions on the V speeds? I mean from a practical standpoint we should all know what they mean, do they expect a textbook one paragraph answer or a demonstration of the understanding?

As far as briefings, I know each company has various expectations, ours are rather generic, do they expect one with extreme detail starting from the pushback or a simple takeoff briefing?

I'm sure I'll have more questions as I keep reading.
