Default Leave without pay and building seniority

Good morning team,

Looking to get my ducks in a row for when Atlas starts recruiting again.

I’m currently employed full time else where and have surplus leave that I would need to use prior to departing that job. I’d also need time off to relocate my family to wherever I’m based.

I had the bright idea of taking leave from the current job to cover the training at Atlas and then take leave without pay from Atlas to organise the family relocation, prior to departing my old job for good.

Would this be something Atlas would likely support? If yes, would seniority continue to build while on leave (shortening the time I’m receiving first year pay)?

I doubt any company would look favorably on trying to be employed at two companies at the same time. Anecdotal and unverified but I’ve heard of people getting pulled from indoc when they find out stuff like that.

not just at Atlas but almost every company. Matter of fact if company A finds out you went to B you might end up without A or B.

Personal leaves of absence were offered on a seniority basis as part of our current Reallocation LOA. However, it is not something that should be expected in the future.

There are typically delays between completing training and beginning OE. This time could be used to relocate. With atleast 13 days off per month, and the 60 day selchedules going junior, you should find it easy to schedule a move.

Another note on OE, you need to complete it and consolidate to 100 hours within 120 days... well just about everyone gets extended so lets call it 150 days of your type ride. You don't want to take time off until that is complete, otherwise you have to take a PC and your hours reset to 0 of 100.

With Gateway travel, there really is no urgent need to relocate. Living in base gives you a few more days at home and makes picking up OT easier. But there are a lot of better places in the country to live than our bases.

Use your vacation days or accept a buyback if you can before your change jobs. If you lose them, well, its a small price to pay if Atlas is where you want to make your future career.

Small note, I believe the leaves of absences were first come first serve, not seniority based.

The CBA has LOAs available (Article 13) but they are generally for things like family emergencies and such. Definitely not to "minimize time" on first year pay.

As others have said this is a good way to wind up unemployed.

Yea….no, I would not advise that, at all.

Your plan is pretty brazen, pretty selfish, and highly, highly unlikely to succeed.

Thanks for the responses team. It’s about as I expected but it never hurts to ask.

Could you elaborate on the selfish part to this?
