In the eyes of the IRS it is a benefit. In their mind you live in base. So if the company is flying you “home” to start work you must have been somewhere on vacation. Same thing with a hotel in base prior to the trip. Why would you need that if you live there. At an old job the company told the IRS they provided a room close to the airport for the company’s convenience to insure a quick response to call out. Not sure if Atlas did the same but it’s been years and years since Atlas imputed income.

^This. Everyone is responsible for getting themselves to work, as far as the IRS goes. For an office worker: where you live and now you get to work is your problem and regardless if you have a 15 minute or a 3 hour drive that's on you. However, if the company had a limo pick you up and drive you to the office that's considered a benefit and part of your compensation. Same if they paid for a company car just for getting to the office (not the same as someone who travels for work, which is why deadheads aren't taxed).

In the airline world all crew live at their domicile as far as this goes. Unlike a paid airline ticket, jumpseating technically is free and not available to the public so there's no way to impute it. But as for the airline itself, it never considers your jumpseat time for pay or duty limits just like it can't for someone driving in. Same thing with crash pads vs paid hotels in base at Atlas. One is paid by the employee out of pocket, the other is a paid benefit.

So gateway to/from your base is considered part of your compensation. What that means is if an airline ticket costs $500 you have that $500 added to your gross income and taxed accordingly. The consequences of that is you'll see more withheld out of your paycheck (since you technically made $500 from that airline flight) and of course your total tax bill would be unusually high for your earnings but probably not enough to get upset about.

That all said, it seems we're getting hit by imputed income a lot less than the bad old days just a few years ago. Will it come back? Technically it could, but it sounds like lately the IRS accepts a pretty loose interpretation of the laws for stuff like this.

Default Sir

Hello. Thank you for comment.
I hope settle Dallas.(it will be my first nest in USA)
I considering Well education, low tax, low living cost(Despite the recent surge)
west plano, flower mound, frisco, south lake(north side of dallas) interest.

Now I live in South Korea and My Family and relative also living south korea.
So I strong Interest Atlas. As far as I know, Atlas has many flights to ICN
But I know that DFW isn't home base 747.

If I stay DFW, I would like to know the travel schedule departing from Dallas.
And most of the time, the schedule from USA to ICN will be 747 ?
And new polks gain the 747 is not common.??

I have a total 3000 total hours.
2 eng jet - f5 fighter 740 hours
1 eng jet - fighter 2000 hours
and etc. 200 hours around.
many thanks.

Unless you have a green card or right to work in the US or an Australian I don't think Atlas will sponsor you unfortunately

The junior First Officer base for the 747 is Anchorage. With your jet experience I’d say there is a chance you could start as a 747 FO. Atlas would buy you a ticket from DFW to ANC the day before your trip starts or maybe two days before because they want you to get rest in base before you start your trip. At the end of your trip Atlas would buy you a ticket to DFW. I would say to get back on the plane after clearing customs if you can because the plane will be continuing on to LAX or ORD or CVG and there are more options getting home when you are out of Alaska. Once or twice I’ve flown ANC to DFW and been home while collecting deadhead pay back to ORD. With some seniority you could change your base to Chicago or Los Angeles, both do a lot of Pacific flying and travel is easier.
