Hi Guys,
Specific to the 747 here - while on duty for 17 days, do you get much downtime whilst away? Or basically min rest the whole time, working fairly hard. What are the hotel's generally like in terms of quality and location?
Thanks in advance.

The Captain has nothing to do with who can be listed on the jumpseat, that normally happens long before the crew even sees the paperwork. They’re listed first come first served but OAL can be bumped by Atlas jumpseaters.

Hotels are mostly very good and in a good location with lots of options nearby for food, entertainment, etc.

There are times where rest will be crazy short and then there will be times where you have tons of down time. Especially if you are in HNL or SYD waiting on the QF birds. I am currently on day 3 of a layover in ANC that isn’t hard rest.

On these long ones do they expect you to stay on location? Because 3 days would be easily sufficient to travel home for a day or two rather than hanging around in a hotel in anchorage…

Depends on where your home is. 3 days rest in LAX and you live in Nevada has a higher probability of success than maybe ANC to the Left Coast and definitely East Coast will be a challenge but has been done if you’re that JS King. Primary lines have different rules regarding schedule changes vs secondary schedule checks, etc. and sometimes change is rampant here. Sometimes folks get the “Heavy Rest” when hitting base. ORD is my base and they rarely if ever let me touch base as they know I am a guaranteed flight risk is what I truly believe.

They’ll buy you a ticket home for an in-base layover of >48 hours.

This ^^^ is the good stuff when “in-base”. ANC probably does well with this as a new hire base for the 74. Maybe LAX does well too? Maybe others can chime in on the other bases. They outsmart me when I initially head to ORD as they exile me to RFD - very clever. Hopefully others are taking advantage of this as it’s been years since I have had the opportunity run home mid-trip.

Due to some cancelled flying, I had 7 days off in ANC, which is my base this month. So I’m sitting at home getting stuff done and will head back up later this week to finish my pattern. Luckily, I’m a primary line holder.
