Hi, I don't really know about the cargo world and lately, I've been pondering about starting a new career here, that is if they accept me. I've been flying 737 for 8 years and wanted to fly bigger planes.
I also have been reading both Atlas and Kalitta forums for the past months and had a few questions. Can you choose the fleet you want to fly as a new hire? or are they assigned to you? Can I choose widebody without widebody experience? If I were to choose 747, how many hours do I expect to fly each month? or more explicitly, how much do I expect to earn each month on average? At my current company as a 738 capt, I take home about 9 grand on average. I am overseas with a family so had more interest in the cargo companies to work out the schedule to start and end overseas.
any input would be truly appreciated. thanks in advance.

First year pay is 94$/h at 64 hours, plus per diem. You should budget for that for the first 6-7 months or so. Once you start flying you will most likely make more than that, but anything over the 64 hours is delayed a month. So per diem, Article 33, flying more than 64 and VX is paid out the following month… I started in March and I’m finally about to get my first paycheck that will pay more than 64 at the end of this month.

when you interview they ask you for a preference, it’s not guarantee that you’ll get that airplane you want. however my understanding is that I’d you ask for the 74 and have prior 121 experience then you’ll probably get it. Atlas that’s how’s it worked for me…

Thanks for this info. I was hoping to take advantage of overtime pay but from what I gather I should budget for minimum which would be less than what I currently get. Also from looking at the pay scale, it would be a while before it catches up to mine. Unless I did the calculation incorrectly. It's just that I have fixed expenses to cover and also wanted fly more while still young. Again thanks for the info, really appreciate it.
Can’t tell ya what works for you/the family. If you’re getting closer to the top of the pay scale where you’re at the juice is probably worth the squeeze. If you’re close to upgrade there probably not.
From a purely qualitative, absolutely doesn’t pay the bills standpoint, I don’t know where else you can find the variety we have here.

Seat lock
Hi, everyone!I got a confusing question here. I was asked to choose a preference plane,I picked B767, but the class won't be available until two months later. So I chose B737 instead, I was told that seat lock would be 2years. So if in two years, I am lucky enough to get the bid to fly wide body fleet, how about the wage and seniority? Will it be refreshed ? Appreciate anyone's anwser!

Other assumption is 17 days away from base not having layover in the US, though unlikely it won't influence to total amount that much)
So for the 747 which is the highest hourly paid fleet you'd already reach your target of 9k a month after tax without any over time after 12 months.
First year During training 94,76 (Hourly) x 64(hours) = 6064,64(gross salary) x 0.7(tax) = 4245,25 + 30(days) x 24(hours) x2.85(dollar per day) = 6297,25 after tax
First year (assuming normal year 1 salary after training) 120.51 x 82.5 = 9942,07 x 0.7 = 6959,45 + 17 x 24 x 3.5 = 8387,45 after tax
Second year 137,10 x 82.5 = 11310,75 x 0.7 = 7917,52 + 17 x 24 x 3.5 = 9345,52 after tax
Hope it helps, other can chime in how much a 4 day overtime trip on the 747 gets you cause that i don t know
Edit: This is just ment to give a ball park and that you can get to your target a lot faster then you might think

Sorry Buzo, but your logic is not sound.
CRT begins when you report and ends when you are released, so first and last day of the pattern are not necessarily a full 4.85 hours of pay.
Second, there is no training pay. Year one, all fleets is $94.76 / hour. You are spot on though for year 2 rates on the 74, $133.11 now... it will be $137.10 for someone hired today.
