I know where he is. He is an A320 systems instructor at United. My sim partner and I had him during initial. Hands down, the best instructor we have ever had, but even that statement doesn’t do him justice. I’m glad to hear he is so legendary in the 747 community.

Yes, that is the difference between our “gateway” travel and a more normal “home” basing system. As pointed out above, it’s voluntary but we have no commuter clause. It is nice to know you have a regular ticket to the airplane but the trade off is the company wants you to get there with time to get required rest before your trip. So if your trip starts mid afternoon you’ll probably be leaving your home 24 hours prior. No per diem, no rig but the company will cover your hotel prior to the trip. And that leads back to the imputed income discussion.
If your pattern starts in your base, then normally the company will want you in your base about 12 hours ahead of your block-out time/reserve start time, if they pay for your airline ticket into your base. Your travel would then be on days off. Sometimes at the end of a pattern you will airline to your Gateway/Alternate Travel destination before your pattern shows you arriving at your base. In that case, you will be getting paid while you are already at your destination.
