PHX base

So if they remove Phoenix as a base in the future, but still have a lot of flights into/out of Phoenix, where do folks live in that case? Can you still live in Phoenix and start/stop in Phoenix, but technically be "based" somewhere else? Or will you have to commute to say Dallas, then your trip has a leg through Phoenix or something like that?

PIT - population of 304,000
PHX - population of 1,450,000
Do you really think the largest airline in the world is simply going to walk away from the SIXTH largest city in the United States? Will there be some downsizing and synergies at play? Certainly. But to see AA to completely exit Phoenix is highly unlikely.
The rumor I am hearing is that management envisions a pilot base of around 800 when it is all said and done.

This^^^^. Phoenix, Scottsdale ($$), Paradise Valley ($$$$), Carefree, Cave Creek, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale, Peoria, and so on. Phoenix metro is huge. To leave it to SWA, Spirit, Allegiant, and so on is nuts. They leave they will never ever get it back. That's the facts. Too many want in, why would any airline want out. It will not be huge but it will ride for a while.

PHX will become an RJ hub while LAX reduces regional flying and beefs up mainline to take advantage of available gates.
Phoenix existed as a hub because it was a West to East connecting hub. Now LAX and DFW, and to an extent ORD also serve that purpose.
I would not move to Phoenix.
CLT will remain a large domestic hub as long as the airport authority keeps their costs low. That is the sole reason for CLT as a hub. The good news is they know this. If they raise fees they can kiss AA goodbye.
