Quite a few changes. 737 and 320 saw more CA's awarded with the lowest seniority getting the award dropping about 200-300 numbers from the prelim. Still ~2 year upgrades.

A lot of the DCA 737 CA awards got changed to withheld.
not just DCA. All are 737 FOs as they’re needed. Heavy 320 FOs so all got class dates

Those FO's then are living the dream. Though likely only withheld for most likely one vacancy and likely be released in March's( though maybe to a different base). Get to enjoy their FO bidding power, but getting paid captain. Especially when it comes to vacation bidding in January.

For those captains looking forward to those coming in below them...... Certainly sucks.

This is probably a dumb question, but what does withheld mean?

You're awarded a position on a vacancy but the company needs you in your current position more so you stay there. They can't skip over you in terms of seniority. You're paid at the higher pay rate of the two as of the effective date of the vacancy award (December bid month in this case) until you get released from your withhold on a future vacancy (4 per year minimum), or if you bid something else on a future vacancy. They have up to 12 months to withhold you, just depends. If they exceed 12 months you're removed from flying and are paid to stay home until you get trained (rare these days).

Some consider it a good deal to keep their current bidding seniority and be paid much much more to do so. Some don't.

It mostly depends on if you are working for the money or the ego stroke. In a previous life I could pick up OT in the FO seat at my CA pay rate. Nothing beats CA pay to pull gear and talk on the radio.

Question: a friend at AA showed me a picture of “December vacancies” and it has about 80 FO spots. Does that mean AA will resume hiring before December?

literally meaningless. Any projections in a vacancy bid are worth next to nothing and change hour by hour. AA managed to find extra training capacity in one week and significantly changed the final award from the preliminary

Doubt it. The FO vacancy numbers don’t seem to indicate - well anything, really. They’re just theoretical spots for lateral moves more than anything else.

Also like AYB said, the numbers keep changing. Somehow they added 53 additional upgrades between the prelim and final awards.

My opinion is that this holiday season is going to be a staffing nightmare here with zero hiring, huge retirements, and lots of folks offline for training. Hope I am wrong.

We may see some small schedule cuts as the months go by. We just announced some LHR cuts from PHX and LAX.

All the legacies added way too many seats and well outpaced inflation increases over the past year or two.
