So what's the most junior captain in the system now?

Will be interesting to see how the new reserve system effects upgrade time on the next vacancy. It's risky for junior people to upgrade with the impending changes possibly making life very difficult for junior pilots on reserve.

I’m not following all the doom and gloom on the new reserve system honestly. It will take maybe 2-3 months for people to figure out effective bidding strategies. I get it, nobody likes change, but I don’t think it’ll be anywhere near as bad as people keep saying. Most junior SC guys I fly with are getting abused as is anyway. Nature of the game.

For NB, don’t bid 5 day or more day work blocks and you’ll probably get used once per block, and that would most likely be on your last or second to last day.

It will definitely be more predictable than the current GTD system. Especially for senior people. There will be no breathing room for super junior people, and no incentive to fly early in the month to avoid flying later in the month. Also unfortunate that other reserve ballots won't be visible for planning purposes.

I am not fearful, but I am not buying what the union stated on the townhall that it will be a boon for the senior guys.

Senior guys on reserve like to bid 3 day blocks. If all the junior guys are in the 4-5 day bucket with the senior in the 3 day bucket when a 3 day trip is available, the senior one is getting it.

As a person that has bounced between SC and LC being junior, I am getting used just as much between both reserve status's. Just when I go unused on SC, I am still on a leash for that day. Where if I am LC and wake up at 7 am that morning, I am not being used that day and go on the water, etc.

Everybody seems to have forgotten that the new system has two components. Assignments made inside DOTC are (as described on here) based on seniority in a bucket system.

But... outside DOTC is not seniority based in the bucket but rather based on Reserve Days Worked (RDW). So Pilot A has worked (as in actually worked a trip, not sat reserve unused) 4 days and pilot B has worked 6 days and they are in the same bucket...Pilot A gets used first regardless of seniority. So since senior pilots will get used less during DOTC, their RDW will be lower and they will get used more outside DOTC. Personally, I think getting used outside DOTC sucks, so really the senior guys are getting screwed on this. What's funny (sad actually) is, 90% of the pilot group doesn't know this and will be in for a surprise. That will be an advantage for the informed pilot though. And yes if both pilots have the same RDW, it will revert to seniority.

Other bad part is coming off vacation, you will likely have low RDW, so yup, prime person for an outside DOTC assignment. It will behoove you to take vacation at the end of the month for this reason (opposite of best practice right now).

I bid reserve and it is extremely rare to get anything outside of DOTC, at least in my bid status, which is huge. Most of that stuff goes to OG and MU.

Thats because it's IMAX season and people are flying very high months (and a metric crap ton of people are running IMAX game plans this year)...wait until Sept. yeah it might be more rare, but I stand by my statement that it sucks a lot more (14 hour report will help a little).
