So the old rust buckets get heavy checks, new screens and more first class seats.

The point of the mod is to extend the life 5 more years, but it will take 5 years to complete the fleet so some of those airplanes from the 90s will still be here in a decade (2034). Probably beyond because we'll still be waiting for our Max deliveries.
meanwhile they burn thru alll the reserves and AA is losing 800+ bodies a year to age 65

So yes, four years ago AA retired stuff.

They are flying every single airworthy airplane in the inventory right now, usually packed to the gills and both ends, at least the narrow body side.
I think we misunderstand each other. It’s obvious, with a newer fleet, we’re not retiring any more aircraft for a while. Your post of incredulity led to my response because it really wasn’t that long ago since we last retired aircraft. That’s all.

I don't think a new hire is going to come in here at your senority.

base by base dependent and September is a slow month. My smaller status is definitely under staffed

Tracked excess retirements for years. Decades ago it averaged 15% per year. When I stopped tracking it years ago it had decreased to approx. 10% (8%?????). But most people are staying to 65 in the last decade so it might be even less than the 10% (8%?) number. Deaths, fired, quit, LTD > 5 years, are part of the number falling off the list.

Over the long term it balances out. Guys retiring early reduce the retirement totals in their planned year. But does anyone remember what 2027's retirements were projected to be, right now, when 2027 rolls around?

So many pilots over the years have told me they are retiring early. So few actually do it. A combination of it getting really good at the end, hesitation to make that big decision, economy falters, etc.. I tell myself 65 but do hope to go earlier.

As Slice has said before. "When you have enough and had enough, then you retire".

How much is enough?

as posted above, base dependent. DFW reserves are the band-aid for the other bases, and are getting used more.

bottom line is if you don't have a Pass All installed and want to fly, especially with a ballot turned on, you can expect to fly.
