I wasn’t referring to anything in the near future. More a change in their business model to be less staffed and give out more premium flying to avoid the potential costs of furloughs down the line. I think Covid taught them how expensive a furlough will be and said pilots will not be promptly ready to fly when recalled. It’s more a theory to why we’re running such a tight ship.
Generally they staff for the shoulder seasons and flex during summers. That's been their strategy since pre-Covid.
There's probably some APA data that shows rsv flying YOY month to month to drill down to what is going on. Would be interesting to see and compare this time next year.
Also FWIW Delta is getting creamed with this crowdstrike thing. It looks like another repeat of that 5-day ordeal that happened a few years ago.
Yesterday cancels by airline:
34% - Delta
15% - United
44% - Endeavor
13% - Spirit
...
1% - AA

Idk I’m slightly confused with the rumors of hiring pushed past the new year. A year from now we’ll have 15,000 pilots with no hiring. Our order book has us growing in fleet size year after year through 2030. Honestly what am I missing? The only explanation I can contemplate— they’re attempting to run a tight ship with pilot efficiency (avoid costs associated with potential furloughs).

It's APC so, just for speculation's sake, will the hiring pause cause:
A) increased PM/PR/OG as retirements happen and PHX 737 / ORD 320 open
B) a reduced winter schedule aligned to retirements, "softened domestic demand" (ref OALs reporting), and management decisions / direction
3) no effect due to RAS "efficiencies"
D) some combination of the above
z) some other effect not already covered yet?
Get out your crystal ball and state your case!

While that's the smart/logical play, I think the majority will continue to 65. Too many egos and identities tied up in this job.

This. I personally know 4 bubbas doing exactly this. There's going to be alot "off-the-top" I think. Shrink to efficiency/profitable and PM/OG flowin' much much more.
