Everyone can see the airports now. The question is fall bookings. No management team is talking about that. Is revenge travel here to stay for another season? It feels long in the tooth but I'm fine with YOLO keeping all of us employed.

Study shows Americans willing to go into debt for vacation

According to a Bankrate survey, over one-third of Americans will take on debt in order to travel during the summer. While this consumer habit can apply to Americans across the board, Gen Z and Millennials are doing it at the highest rate.

The Bankrate survey shows 47% of Millennials and 42% of Gen Z said that they plan to go into debt in order to pay off a vacation. Michael Goldberg, a consumer habits specialist out of Case Western Reserve University, said there could be a couple of reasons for this behavior. Younger generations want authentic experiences.

No, he has been a voice of reason here for years. His views and experience are a welcome addition to this morass. It is a fact that when COVID furloughs were on the table APA shined in holding the line on any pay rate cuts as well as the zero time-line construction to reduce the total number. Nothing he said is wrong.

How do you "pay off a vacation" via debt?

Probably just the Federal Government dumping so much money into circulation.

You can’t just add $1,200,000,000,000 into circulation overnight. This is still “infrastructure spending”.

Supposedly total national student loan payments are equal to $18,000,000,000 a month.

18 Billion a month starting back on a September “on ramp” will likely suck wind out of airlines.

45 million people restarting their $350 loan payments has to be felt somewhere.

You are making a huge assumption: that demand holds up. Economic activity is already slowing, people are up to their eyeballs in CC debt, and Covid revenge travel money appears to be finally running out. Every expert says this pace of travel is unsustainable. Attrition will most likely lead to right sizing without the need for furloughs.

Household debt service payments as a percentage of income is near all time lows. The boomers are going to continue retiring en mass and use their savings to travel....and in premium seats. I think we continue to see strong demand as do the leadership at the big 3. DAL/UAL/AAL aren't buying a bunch of planes bc they think demand is going to soften.
