Does anyone really deny it though? Everyone I’ve ever flown with is pretty open about using sick whenever they feel like it because it’s never questioned.

Who is denying in public? The culture has been to treat sick like PTO the entire time I've been here, and the chiefs not only look the other way, but many actively encourage it. My last sick call was because my wife was getting blasted at work and I wanted to be home to better support the household. And before someone chimes in with a "but think of the poor reserves!", the SC that flew my trip hadn't flown all month and grabbed it for premium. So a $30K month (+17%) for 43 hours of TAFB. Cry me a ****ing river.

I just don't view a trip you don't like because your seniority couldn't hold better and couldn't trade it away using TTS or couldn't hold a holiday off, etc as not among those legit reasons.
You knew when you entered this industry that being junior would mean working the crap trips and working holidays. Being junior shouldn't have to suck, but being junior does mean those things. Putting it on a reservist is utter crap. It's not their job to deal with what your seniority could or could not hold when it comes to trip quality and flying over holidays.

I never said there are not legit reasons to call in sick when technically not sick.

No one says use sick as PTO, they specifically say call them and save your sick and they can use an EO day. Everyone disregards it as a form of entrapment.

If only there was a solution to decrease the number of pilots using sick time for getting out of unwanted trips and must-have days off... trip trading improvements?
Nah, you'll be senior someday son.

I don't necessarily disagree about sick abuse, but I generally give guys a break with regard to their attitude towards it. With the culture the way it is, I don't blame people for treating it like PTO.
