a good FO should be doing everything in their power to take (administrative in this case) load off the captain so they can focus on the big picture operation and make the strategic decisions. And it certainly means helping when asked, but one should be proactive enough not to be asked all the time.
All four had four stripes somewhere else. One of them had four stripes for like a month before we hired them. Various regional backgrounds. Two out of four on probation. One out of four told me he already had a few bad probation reports. Which was not surprising. Another one told me he had already used all of his sick time because he just doesn't feel like going to work sometimes.
This is Not a generalization of any group just my experience with a handful of newer first officers. I can say without a doubt that the vast majority of the people I have flown with now as a junior captain have been great willing to learn good attitude etc.

As an aside being the junior captain living in base hasn't been so bad. So far this month I haven't been used on five of my reserve days which has allowed me to go do a ton of activities with my family on days where I could be flying to Orlando again. I know they are not days off but I am using them like that and it allows me to have probably a better quality of life than I did as a line holder. At least for me.

If I tell you to call ops because I'm on the phone with maintenance just to do it. I'm not being a dick I managing the tasks at hand. Also I'm under 40, and all of those first officers have been under 30. Didn't think there was that big of a disparity between the generations. Apparently I don't hang out with enough under 30-year-olds to realize that. 🤣.
Captain for a year, haven’t heard that yet. I’d be astounded to hear it in a reasonable situation like what you described… Maybe there is more to the story 🧐

That is similar attitude I had with a new hire that is older than me. Said moment he is off probation, any trip that he can't trade and doesn't like, he will just call in sick.

Pretty much said it is the job of a reservist to cover trips he doesn't like....

He was great to fly with overall besides that one sticking point. Hence I didn't put that in his probation report.

But we can't complain about how we couldn't get better sick rules when we prove to the company that we will just abuse them......

And? What’s the problem with that? That’s the attitude of pretty much every CA I’ve flown with as well. What someone calls out sick for is between them and the Chiefs and from what has been suggested by the CPO, they view sick time more as PTO anyway.

BTW, the reason we didn’t get more sick time is senior dudes abusing it to try to IMAX, not new hires calling out because they don’t want to fly a bad trip or need a day off they couldn’t bid for.

Banging out sick because you have something on one of those days that you can't miss or can't move I can understand after trying to move that trip.

But calling out sick because you can't hold a better trip, can't hold a holiday off, etc is just as bad as those abusing it for IMAX reasons. Of course those captains have that sick bank because they often flew sick getting me sick causing me to burn close to half my annual accrual on one sick call.

I have a trip next month that I am trying to trade out of because I don't like it. But I am not going to bang out sick if I can't. It's what my seniority could hold which isn't much since I am a junior captain.

You're right it's between them and the chief, but don't complain about not getting more sick accrual or changing the rules for a line holder about clearing sick and stop burning your sick bank. I don't want to hear it if you're one to call in sick over a holiday, a trip you didn't like, or used it as a way to IMAX.

semantics. Just label it PTO and be done. It's de facto PTO already, judging by the common usage everybody denies in public / enacts in private.

SIN is an awesome policy and a rare gem for the reserve force, who usually get the shaft.
