Also what is the obsession with IFE? Are you really sitting back there plugging headphones into the back of seat like it’s 2005? Everyone has ipads or laptops they can watch downloaded movies on and use bluetooth headphones.

There is literally no difference in seat pitch/width in economy between the big 3 domestic carriers when comparing the same fleet. It’s all the same. Jetblue actually beats all three of them.

It's optics. The lack of IFE makes the product feel cheaper. It's probably been 10 years since i've watched TV in a hotel room. But if I get a hotel room without a TV or with a tiny old flat screen it makes the room feel cheap. It's one of the many reasons Delta is considered a premium product compared to AA. I bet in 3 years AA will be trying to convince the traveling public that flying to Europe in a 321XLR is comprable to a DAL 330. Continually choosing the cheapest option has consequences for your brand perception. I think it's ingrained in the mgt culture. Remember Doug Parker was the first to try and charge economy pax for water back in the day.

Agreed, I have a corporate background and or airplane had a very expensive in flight entertainment system that got used exactly once in ten years when the boss brought his grandkids.

But I love the "2005" narrative. Sour grapes, anyone?

I do think there is psychological value, as mentioned earlier, in terms of it feeling more premium seeing all of the tv screens in the cabin. The screens United is installing with bluetooth connectiveity will be a nice addition for them.

I personally use the IFE screens. Sometimes just for the flight map. A couple months ago I caught the new Ferarri movie on jetBlue. The Big Lebowski has become one of my fav movies and I've only ever watched it on planes. Also finally wathed The Hangover, on United earlier this year.

I don't think it has much of a practical use for most. I'd certainly rather have nothing than some old system that has issues with tv screens being on MEL, etc (not saying that's the case at Delta, just saying in general). I would also rather watch on my own device than touch some old grimy screen and have to plug in some cheap headset the airline provides (because almost no one has headphones with cords and jacks anymore, that is objectively dated).
