AA NYC
Hey everyone, any insight on what the QOL is for AA in NYC? I live within 45 mins of LGA and JFK so thankfully no commuting. Im hoping to get NYC based and im curious to hear what it's like. I know it's super junior but, what type of trips are people getting on the bus/73. 1,2,3,4 day trips? redeyes? the good and the bad ? Im currently based in jfk for a LCC carrier and im trying to decide if AA would be a good move. Thanks again!

JFK bus has a lot of transcon to cover. Best n/b flying in the system *if* you can avoid the red eyes. But some people don't mind the red eyes as much so if you're in that camp flying red eye transcons can be a good gig.
LCC vs AA question? Access to w/b flying is the answer. I looked at the 1000 most senior CA and FO's a couple of years ago. 91% of the CA's and 89% of the FO's were on w/b's. They're not dumb. There's a reason it goes senior. Money, less hassle, trip stability, late afternoon/evening departure with early/mid-afternoon return, etc, etc. I used to get in 2 rounds of golf, mow my lawn, during a 3 day trip. You have until mid-afternoon off on day 1 and get home early enough on day 3 to do plenty of stuff. You miss 2 dinners, 2 lunches, and 2 breakfasts at home. Do that 4-5x a month. It's very simple compared to domestic flying. Common statements - "it's a different airline", "if I'd know it was this good I'd have done it sooner", and "I'd have done it sooner if I had more seniority." About 10% don't care for it. The sleep cycle issue is real.

It's been awhile since I looked but when I checked NYC trip had the fewest legs per trip. Location is the answer - except for west coast bases it has the longest flights to the major cities it serves and the AA hubs. Put 'avoid CLT' in your PBS awards and you'll probably reduce the number of legs you fly (generality - more legs = more pain) as you'll reduce the east coast short leg cycling out of CLT. Obviously that impacts the overall PBS bidding power.

What's the schedule look like for a junior NB FO sitting reserve? How about when they hold a line? Basically, is it feasible to clump all your reserve time/trips together? Considering to commuting to NYC (I know, I know...) and want to minimize trips. How long for new hires to move up to WB FO in NYC? Would QoL improve much for a commuter with the NB to WB transition?

As a commuter, I unfortunately have no direct
flights from my home airport to NYC on AA. I have lots of options (7-9/day) on DL and B6 though. Would it be better to take the seniority movement in NYC, or take something like DCA or CLT which is on AA metal, but only 3 flights/day and also more senior bases?

I've been here just about 2 yrs and I'd be single digit seniority if I was in NYC; pretty much get what ya need and make your commute "better" with that. Good luck.

Looking to bid NY as my first place commuting from ECP for a bit. Hopefully I'll work out and grab that sweet 777 sooner than later, but that will probably be a few years away. The option for international NB still exist and I'll jump on that as well. If anyone would recommend a good crashpad site other than 411. Thanks in advance and sorry to OP for traying to snag some info from your post.
