First impressions are important, and pulling up to the gate looking clean and professional is key to putting passengers at ease.

Pilots are held to a high standard, and it's an important standard to uphold. I would love to have a beard, but I knew when I started in this profession that I was giving up the ability to have one during my working days.
Yeah, but you can’t trust a boat captain if they don’t have a beard.

I'm not saying those with beards can't be trusted, I'm just saying there is value in having all pilots be clean shaven. Also, the core mission may be the same but the stakes are much higher with air travel. Still appreciate the humor.

I saw three CAs in DFW today that weighed at least 300lbs (each), and those were either Gen X or younger. Can we start with an AA diet program? I'd rather fly with a bearded crew than some .... nevermind.

So you’d be fine with a bearded dude, under 300 lb but maybe unprofessional in whatever other aspect…..rather than a 300 lb fella that’s maybe a hell of a guy and 100% professional, with weight issues. Gotcha

In his defense and to not be biased, I feel like you could flip that around the other way as well. I agree about the weight issue not being a good look as well, but nothing that can be done as long as they can pass a medical.

Im not trying to be sarcastic, but I believe the U.S. is one of the few remaining countries that does not allow beards. I think European pilots are viewed as having a “more professional” overall look than U.S. pilots.

Also, with the amount of new hires that look like they’re fresh out of high school I would think management would want beards. Most people look older with beards and I think that passengers would feel more comfortable with pilots they “feel” has experience over someone who is clean shaven.

Being extremely overweight is objectively a safety issue. Having a beard is not.

Absolutely not. Your average passenger can't tell the difference between a pilot and a flight attendant let alone notice who shaved and who didn't

I honestly don't care either way. I hate shaving but it's not high on my list of wants. I'd like TTS fixed first.

All that said. This isn't the 1950's. No one cares.

It's about appearance. A neatly trimmed beard or other facial hair looks much better than a fat dude or chick. If you have serious weight issues, you are not being professional and do not know how to take care of yourself. Besides, being 300 lbs might be an invitation to a heart attack when crap hits the fan.

I wouldn't feel comfortable flying with Bubba the Hut.
