SWA to AA
#53
Newly separated Mil dude wondering if the grass really is greener.
Hired at SWA less than a year ago.
Already holding Dallas reserve, not quite a line.
Reserve military on the side.
No driving desire to do WB minus the allure of WB reserve and not get called which is extremely appealing.
Wanting a DFW base. Not planning on moving ever again.
Got hired by AA and SWA already. SWA won because us military dudes are already brainwashed into thinking leadership actually cared about us and that company culture matters.
AA CJO is still on the table so I wouldn’t even have to interview.
Would you make the switch?

Spot on, like the other two major legacies, it is an incredibly good job. Great pay. Good options to fly as you go up in seniority. Perfect? No, but who is? Potential of furlough? Sure. But you will have lots of income, a respected position and lots of stories to tell your grandkids and neighbors. And in the nursing home, you can fight each other with your canes about who had the better career.

You were given a crap hand as were many of your 2000-era cohorts but I think there is something to learn from it, I know I did. And it did save me from a life of jumping around. So, thank you (I know that doesn't help)

You hide behind the idea of “just wanting the best contract”, but they could offer 20 days off a month for $500 an hour and you’d still be complaining about how terrible American is to work for.
Obviously you’re just salty about your own career and blame AA. I personally have a dislike for you because you remind of some the Endeavor flows coming through Delta speaking with the same toxic attitude of “how terrible this place is compared to Endeavor” GMAFB.
Again, why don’t you go work for Southwest? You’d probably be the first NH from AA they’ve had in years and they’ll definitely question your sanity but why not make the move?

Zap,
For what reason- I'm genuinely curious. Feel free to PM me. I have a very short amount of time to make a decision here.
I'd retire at 2% from SWA presuming minimal growth- 3% no growth.
Less days off, PBS at AAL. I would need a fine fella around the age of 30-32 to give me an estimate of my retirement seniority at AAL dates for DFW holdings- CA & WB FO to really make a calculated decision.

Lack of schedule flexibility- from my knowledge.
Concerns of their balance sheet? The seniority movement is immaculate no doubt, but..... ^see above.
Why Zap is that your response? I appreciate the insight brother. Other fellas welcome to chime.

Assuming the AIP at AA passes, you know what you’re getting. SW will see major improvements but I doubt we’ll be eating hot lasagna anytime soon in cruise. You’ll be eating semi-cold Chik-Fil-A off your lap when you’re 60 during your 3rd flight of the day.
I’m not leaving SW because it doesn’t make any sense but if I were in my 20’s or 30’s in this market…I’d be at a legacy yesterday.

some will chime in saying I’m wrong, I can only tell you my experience.
Balance sheet…AA is paying off their debt much faster than anticipated.
