Speaking as someone who flew that thing for years and thousands of hours, I never once did a 6-7 leg day in it. My worst was 5, and I only did that once. 4 was rare, 1-3 was typical. Early flights took off around 6, not 5. For the most part we were putting the fleet to bed somewhere between 10 and 11 at night, redeyes excluded. All the redeyes were one leg. So yeah, our lines and trips were far better than anything Group 2 offers today. ODANs didn't exist. The cockpit was a sauna in the summer though.
Earliest ever show besides red-eye was 445am departure, OKC-DFW. Full including FAA jumpseater(!). I don't remember my latest flight. MD-80's did red-eyes in the early aughts. AA had nearly 400 at their peak (385?), they were their main narrowbody jet.
Mainline, after the RJ explosion of the early 2000's, did mostly longer legs. That started changing a few years ago as we gained flying. It's incredible to me how many will look you in the eyes and tell you "we don't want that flying anyway". I can't even. We are now doing stuff that used to be done by mainline. We should be celebrating.
I appreciate your insight but people tend to reminisce about the past and dismiss the negatives.

I had a six legger once. Lots of 5's. Hottest I saw on temp gauge was 108° during push. Guys complaining about hot airplanes now would die lol. Those TWA APUs were crap.

As a Delta pilot, why can’t you guys raise the pay rates? Why is APA selling your TA as being better than us and United? The bragging point for AIP 1 was “100+ items better than Delta” and now is a pay increase for years 1-11 while year 12 remains the same as us to prevent a snap up clause. I understand that you shouldn’t be looking out for other airlines, but it’s hard to wrap my head around considering both Delta and United have almost carried you guys through the negotiations. Almost selfish in a way. All the best.
