So I can see the merit in your comments for things a Mil NH lacks, but those seem like items corrected in the first few months on the line rather than a true lack of aviation competence. What am I missing?

Curious observation. Making crossing & speed restrictions is simply a matter of inputting data to the box correctly, which is kind of OJT here. ATC comms, I certainly noticed deficiencies in myself. Not a lack of SA on what’s happening, just an unfamiliarity with the normal pacing. Example: when to push from ground to tower, when to move from ground to ramp, etc. All picked up quickly. And frankly I think Mil trained folks are more professional and better with brevity regarding comms; I can’t even imagine the vicious throat punch someone would receive at my former command for meowing on guard.

working with prior 121 new hires to get their approaches and landings to safe standards, not simple radio calls and how to descend via but it is what it is.
Like you said it’s not an issue after a few hundred hours on the line.

I came from PSA. My schedule was light years better there than at AA. I’m around 25% in LGA and even if I lived in base… I would still rather have my commute to CLT for PSA. I will admit I’ve been able to drop some of my trips in TTS but what is available for pickup is pretty crappy. So I can get some decent days off, but there’s not much worth picking up. Lots of early starts and late finishes. As a commuter to CLT I was home more often at PSA on top of not having to deal with EWR, LGA, and JFK.
In august I will be in CLT for AA but I’ll be pretty junior for awhile. The trips are better in CLT than LGA but from looking at the PBS awards… it’ll still be anywhere from another 2-4 years to have the credit and days off I had at PSA. Not to mention the critical (premium) pay was waayyyy better at PSA than it is here. PSA’s premium paid better and if you knew what you were doing you could have it set up before the month started and your seniority didn’t matter. At AA, the premium pay isn’t worth much, goes by seniority, and a lot of times you don’t know if you’re getting it until the day prior.
No offense to my brothers and sisters from Piedmont but I think they would agree with me that their schedules are atrocious….
Might be a different level but… American Airlines is the Piedmont of the legacy carriers.

That's really disappointing to hear. I have a great schedule and comfortable at YX, everyone says QOL at legacy is better. I know I need to move on before the regionals reach a critical spiral. Please, please please fix this in the new contract!!! I have no choice but AA because I want to live in CLT. But I've been told commuting at DL still gets you more days home than in base at AA somehow. I don't need perfect trips, just the ability to trade/drop where possible. I do not care about money.

Just bid reserve, it’s not bad in base. With the 85 hour cap, the most you’ll work is 16 days, based on the 5:15 daily credit. I’m really junior in DFW, and only flew 11 days for 61 hours of credit in July. I got an extra day off because I had a 7 day reserve block, and they didn’t use me on a few days, so I got soft days off. YMMV, but I had really good results commuting to long call in NYC, too. I could proffer for trips that ended at a certain time or put me in another group to where I could commute home early. Being a junior line holder probably sucks with TTS being locked down.

I came from Frontier. I was only there for 9 months and was living in base in MCO. Reserve had its issues but we had the ability to move reserve days and drop them (I never tried dropping) but QOL was pretty good. March was my final month and was my first month holding a line. Had 18 days off and was all 2 day trips. So in total I spent 6 nights in a hotel and 2 or 3 of them were in Cancun at a really nice resort. One of those Cancun overnights was 27 hours. I still think AA is better long term but Frontier is a great place for some people who have no desire to do heavy stuff and the money here will be quite better long term.

Look at the DFW open time a couple of days in a row to get an idea. Before DOTC if you want long call and after if you want short call.
