Commuting to Europe
#21
I commuted from Europe for 2.5 years. As a reserve, you won稚 spend much time at home if you commute, regardless if you commute to Europe or anywhere else. I was commuting to NYC at first and my commute was maybe only two hours longer than some guys in my crashpad who commuted from Washington state.
once I became a lineholder, I had a lot more flexibility. I really had to learn the trip trading tools and I am able to get my schedule down to condensed blocks with a lot of days off if I want to. There are many of us who commute from Europe. I moved to base a year ago but now I commute to Europe only during the summers. For reference, I am a narrowbody FO, less than 4 years at the company.

You think it's realistic to do 15 on 15 off? as NY 737 FO? After 6 months or after becoming a lineholder?

impossible unless 737 has lots of 30hr layovers. Currently can稚 bid a stretch of reserve longer than 6-7 days. But, you could do 6 on 1 off 6 on 2 off 6 on then 9-10 off as a reserve. Assuming no forced coverage dates. If you do long call your earliest show day 1 is noon. Auto released at 10 am on last day. You can tell scheduling you値l be uncontactable but willing to accept any afternoon assignments while commuting in before noon on day 1(not many of those flights exist).

I知 not off OE yet, and I知 42% on LGA Bus. Every new hire class gets a lot of LGA bus and every vacancy has people leaving. You値l hold a line fairly quickly on the bus, assuming everything continues as is.

that 42% seen in 3XP is an illusion. Your actual bidding % will appear each month in PBS. But yes, quick to hold a line regardless

NYC gives you a good option if you want to connect through LHR or CDG. There are lots of flights JFK-LHR or CDG and if my memory serves me right you pay only a transfer fee in LHR otherwise you're stuck with a rather high airport tax.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Yeah, sure, but each week, there should be more people under me who are unlocked after completing training. I was able to get LCR and most weekends off on my first bid month. My point remains, that LGA Bus is the way to go if you need to get some scheduling flexibility ASAP.
