Really struggling to make this decision as I hear all kinds of mixed things about the QOL and company culture at AA but my options are limited. I have heard that "reserve life in CLT is pretty good" but I'm not sure what that means. Can anyone elaborate?
Not sure about CLT but you’re going to get all kinds of answers for QOL and culture. First, moral is low at any company in section 6. Second, you have many folks from ther mergers that took them 20-25+ years to uograde so you’re going to get the hateful AA folks. Third, pilots ***** at any airline, I heard bad culture at every single legacy and major. SWA might have been the last good culture and that’s even gone now. My experience here has been great at MIA I’ve been home a lottt and had easily played my schedule around and flown with great people. Living in base for you will be way better than most people since a lot commute so the things they experience you’ll experience less of it living in base. Always choose the airline that allows you not to commute 100%

Who the heck cares about QOL details if you’re planning to move to CLT??? No brainer

A lot of “culture” issues are ameliorated by driving to work. If CLT is in your future, AA is your best choice. I’ve had a decent time with the Captains I fly with, with only 2-3 bad apples, but since I keep bidding reserve I usually don’t stick with them long anyway.

As for QOL, in March I had 5 reserve days I didn’t get used, and 3 more early evening reports. Easy peasy.

I am more junior but can report the same in CLT.

If you’re going to move to Charlotte it’s an easy decision.

only had two captains that were problematic.

I don’t listen to the grumpy guys. They are mostly harmless and not that hard to mitigate.

It’s the best job I’ve ever had and will only get better when we get a new contract. Prior to AA I worked cargo, two regionals and an LCC. It’s not a bad job at all. If you want more detailed info shoot me a PM.

At the end of the day, none of the Big 5 are a bad career. Go where you want to live. 90% of QoL is attitude. Don’t let others dictate yours.

Default Avl / clt

Does any commute AVL to CLT or know anyone that does? After reading how senior WB FO will go in the future, if hired I was considering moving to AVL to make the commute for CLT. I know most would say just live in Charlotte but the whole point of leaving Florida would be to live in the mountains.

Just drive AVL to CLT, it’s like 1+45.

Only downside to driving to AVL is that 85 west of the airport can be bumper to bumper during the usual rush hour times.

The upside is that your commute will never leave you at the gate. Depending on where you are in AVL you have the option of 40 over to 16, or south of AVL taking 74 to connect to 85. Way easier than the vast majority of commutes by air.

I prefer lines to reserve because I just like knowing my trips. Reserve isn’t bad in base. I get an average of 16 days and about half the weekends off on my line of leftover crappy trips.
Cue the imsosuss bitter clown that comes on here to tell everyone how crappy the qol is at AA. It's been great for me in CLT as well and I'm a commuter.
