American is in better shape than most with aircraft. American's problem is their business model. They tried to play cute with booking channels and alienated business customers. They are trying to build a super awesome domestic network and scaling back on international (especially long haul). They seem to think Southwest and JetBlue are their primary competitors.

You keep thinking that. It is a combination of not increasing debt and getting your operation in order, properly examining your CASM, entire cost structure, pricing, etc. When your load factors are 85%+ and you are barely treading water, the last thing you want to do is continue to grow the problem. AA truly needs to start from scratch and analyze the entire operation to determine what they want to do. Delta and United decided to go the premium route, is there enough room for a third “premium” carrier in the US? (Not that AA will ever achieve “premium” status).
