Because they can kiss all their outside hires goodbye. Nobody in their right mind would go to AA with 4000 Regional pilots yet to arrive on property with seniority numbers above them. It will never work unless you do a 100% flow with zero outside hires, and in this environment with retirements is never going to happen.

The entire regional industry is on the verge of collapse. Delta saw this coming and started bringing the flying in-house 5+ years ago with the 717s and A220s. United sees it coming and placed the large order of 737s to replace their faltering UAX feed. AA? No plan. Just going to spend money they can’t afford to continue trying to stop the bleeding.
Not to mention difficulty hiring with the current retirements on the books is instant leverage to have an industry-leading contract. And look at SWA. 10+ year upgrades and they’re still hiring. Delta manages to still fill classes with 200+ New hire /month despite having hired thousands of young/junior pilots in the past several years. There are so many holes to poke in your argument that I won’t even bother. It’s one of those things I have heard repeated so often that I wonder how many pilots even actually stop to think about it.

That’s not true at all. The whole industry is moving towards courting 1500 hour CFIs to come fly Airbus and 737. The entire industry is in the process of a paradigm shift. Not just the regional segment. There will be plenty of new hires for the foreseeable future. Where do you think all the pilots currently flying regional jets for UAX and Delta Connection are going to go?
