AA up or out?

And the "rumor" (I knew a Captain) at the time was; over at TWA which was now not that long out from under H. Hughes went like this, Up until 1964: After 2 years FE (clean) you could take the FO exams; if you passed you were an FO, if you didn't pass you were OUT (like out of the company). After 2 years FO (clean) you could take the Capt exams; if you passed you were a Capt., if you didn't pass you were OUT.
Hence TWA had the youngest Capt.'s and the oldest FE's of all the airlines, HA. I never could dispel or substantiate that setup, the couple TWA guys I knew at the time swore it was true.

I assume he preferred to stay sitting sideways. So, no up or out for him. The church erected a memorial tower in his memory, it exists today.
His son, who was in grade school at the time, is a mechanical engineer and the editor of the 1500 page Six Sigma Handbook (quality / reliability / defect free). I assume his dad's traumatic death that shook the aviation industry had something to do with his interest in "defect free" work.
