I would rather live in base and commute briefly as a new hire. Or move. Though I know that's pretty unpalatable for a lot of people

Even if you don't get it initially, you should be able to get MIA within a few months, possibly even before you are done with training. If you live in MIA, AA is where you want to be. Commuting makes this a different job.

My commute was relatively easy(2 JS, online, 10+ flights a day) and it still wears you down. If you live, or want to live, in MIA AA is where you should be hoping to be. A bonus is that the NB flying out of MIA is top notch.
Finally, it should only take one or two bids to get down to MIA if you don't get it as a new hire. Max of 6 months.
Edit: Missed that other guys post which basically says the same exact thing I did

Never, ever commute if you dont absolutely need to. I commuted for 10 years before getting hired at AA which has a base where I live. 100 BILLION % different job. Cannot stress this enough.

Thank you both for your input. I did commute for a regional for a number of years and it was hell. Home based abroad for the last 15. So I’m definitely hoping AA will start hiring soon.
