I thought flows always went into the second half of the month, but could be wrong. I know someone hired OTS who was assigned the September 24th class about a week and a half ago

No requirement for a backup flight. Does not have to be on company metal. if you think you will miss your trip you call scheduling and they can either positive space you or cover the trip with a reserve. You don't get paid for a trip you miss due to the commuter clause. There is a note that it's supposed to be used on rare cases and abusing the clause can lead to more stringent requirements for your commutes in the future. I've never heard of anyone being accused of abusing the system. It makes commuting pretty stress free. Just try not to use it more than once or twice while on probation.

Even though the contract allows for it, scheduling will not let you rejoin your trip. Your only chance at making up the lost flying is to put yourself on the makeup list. Expect a call from a chief pilot asking for details of your commuter miss along with a note in your PEH documenting the conversation (at least this is what the PHL chiefs are doing).

I don't think people should fall for the intimidation tactics. It is clearly a benefit that has been negotiated in your contract. I'm surprised how many are scared of their own shadow at AA. Phl and LGA chiefs seem to be the outliers with regards to the commuter clause. The other chiefs don't seem to care if you use it, as it is part of your negotiated contract. APA should be all over this attempted land grab by the company. It's just like when they tried to make 3 hours the call out time on reserve a few years ago. 3 hours is nowhere to be found in the contract. It says promptly. That could be 4+ hours depending on which metro area you're based.

I haven’t heard of anyone having a PEH for a missed trip. Crap happens and the CP’s I have come across have all been very helpful. (I’m not saying it hasn’t happened....but I bet having a PEH for a missed trip means it wasn’t the first missed trip...or second)

I’m a PHL E190 FO hired Jan 2017. I have 2 miscommutes, neither while on probation. First was a diversion. 2nd was a rolling maintenance delay and my 2nd flight already had 2 reserved jumpseats. I got a call from a PHL chief and a PEH entry for both. First time it was from TA and the second time it was from DJ. I will say that both PEH entries noted my good faith efforts to get to work and did not have a disciplinary tone. I filled out an APA observers report and got an email reply saying that nothing could be done.
