Somewhat a theoretical question. I will be 46 when I hope to get hired by American, so I think I would have a semi-early pick during the class selection. I live near DC and ideally would pick up the 320 and want to get to DC as soon as possible. How long should it take to transfer to DC if I accepted the LAX 320 (If I was going to stand reserve in LAX from DC for more than a few months, I would rather want to take the LGA 737 instead). It looked like the Junior UDC 320 was in the 7200's out of 7400. Any thoughts on what you would do?

For a potential new hire who would be living in the DFW area, are there any concerns about initial base/equipment choice and related commutes to those reserve/junior lines? For example, is DFW-MIA better than DFW-LAX in terms of number of flights or density of commuters and the like?
I ask because I know that DFW is relatively senior as far as new hires go (at least a year to pickup RSV on 737s or 32Xs -- and more for a line). I want to believe that a commute from DFW to any other domicile is relatively easy... but what if some are harder than others?

Both LAX and MIA have 10+ flights a day (LAX has 1-2 more per day), and both tend to be near/at/over capacity depending on the time of day or day of the week. That said, in more than a year commuting, I've only had to take the jumpseat a handful of times.
In my opinion, the big advantage to LAX is the time zone change if you're trying to commute day of, or sitting LC from home (which is possible if you're smart about it). Otherwise, I prefer the MIA flying for the locations and way fewer redeyes.

Despite the other advice you received, I'd go with the 320. Yes, the 737 gets you LGA and a much shorter commute on paper right off the bat. Howver, you'd be able to put in UDC, PHL, and LGA preferences as soon as you got access to DECS and would most certainly get one of those before you had to do a transcon commute. The 737 out of LGA can be annoying on reserve because it operates out of all three airports. The 320 in LGA mostly operates out of one airport (JFK) but the LGA flying it does isn't as bad as getting yourself to EWR for an 0400 sign in. If you didn't get UDC immediately, but got PHL 320, it's only one airport to cover and close enough to drive in a pinch. Good luck.

Fri Night : go home
Sun: travel
Mon-Fri: indoc days 2-6

Can anyone confirm if that's at all accurate?

I'm in a similar situation - I live near DFW, commute to MIA. It's been almost a year and a half, and I would guess best case scenario would be 20-24 months before I get to DFW as a bottom reservist.
Both LAX and MIA have 10+ flights a day (LAX has 1-2 more per day), and both tend to be near/at/over capacity depending on the time of day or day of the week. That said, in more than a year commuting, I've only had to take the jumpseat a handful of times.

Can anyone confirm if the company will fly your spouse out to DFW for the dinner, or if I will have to buy a ticket for her. Also what are the chances of being able to get non rev benefits by day 2? I have to fly someone out to look after a baby if my wife wants any chance of coming the dinner. Thank you in advance for any info anyone can provide.

Nonrev benefits by day 2? Extremely unlikely.
