AA Class Drops
#1081
“50% of all AA new hire training slots, no fewer than 25 per month can be withheld by Envoy.”
The great debate is, as it appears to be written, some interpret it as whichever is greater. Others interpret it as whichever is less.
If one interprets the former, in a month (in theory) when AA hires 1, they will be forced to take 25 Envoy pilots, even if they are not hiring that many. I contend this makes no sense.
If one interprets the later, in a month when AA hires 50 or more, 25 Envoy pilots will be hired. In a month if AA hires less than 50 pilots, half of them will be Envoy pilots. (e.g. If AA hires 40 pilots in a given month, half of them, 20, will be Envoy pilots.) I interpret this way.
The wording “no fewer...can be withheld by Envoy” is a real puzzlement. In the next Envoy contract I hope this wording gets fixed to make it clear.

And definitely the lesser of the 2. 100 new hires, 25 Envoy. 10 new hires, 5 Envoy. Per month not class, of course

1) post PP but pre DOS and
2) post DOS?
As I read them, it would drop from the 29 (or 50% if small classes) to:
1) 15 (or 35% if small classes) and then to
2) 20 (or 25% if small classes).
Seems ripe to adjust both of them to the negotiated changes for the Protected Pilots. Just my opinion.

Any changes on the next two groups:
1) post PP but pre DOS and
2) post DOS?

I do think 30/mo will never be exceeded due to the cascading monthly training events it creates in a 2500 pilot group.

All groups stay the same post protected pilots. I personally think future groups will be able to negotiate a higher number per month over time. The protected pilots and the 824 both originally started at 20/month and worked their way up to 30/mo and 29/mo over the course of a couple years.

At the same time it is projected 1 in 5 of all the regional pilots will be hired annually by the majors in just a few years, as retirements ramp up. That is the equivalent of hiring at 5 years.
Flow of 14 years vs. hiring rates of 5 years means the flow will no longer be competitive. It will change, or be viewed negatively. In this environment, the flow numbers post Protected Pilots will be forced to change. The writing is on the wall.
