I would think everyone would care about days off. If your competitor gets 3-5 more days off a month for the same amount of hours, that is kind of a big deal. It's an extra day off every week.
I don't mind flying, I just want more options to be home in my own bed as much as possible and not miss out on everything by being in a LaQuinta near the freeway. This is why I prefer day trips or 2-3 day trips. Gone from home only 2 nights a week. Still see your family nearly every day.

Once you have a little seniority you can get as many off as you want. I vary between 17-20 off. Depends on how much pay I want. If my spouse was making "more than a 777 CA could ever dream of making" I would probably drop down to one trip or retire. I think it's going to be easy for AA 777 Captains to make $400k + so I'm guessing your spouse must be in the $700-1 million/year range. Why put up with the part 121 headaches? You could be a flight instructor 5 days a month at the local FBO.

I will say since we transitioned to the AA hotels last fall the quality has gotten much better.
Now we just don't have as many long layovers it seems. Something about how the LAA side calculates the overnight length.

Agreed. If momma made that kind of coin I'd be surrounded by a cloud of smoke listening to to sublime in the backyard all day.

Don't forget that those SWA boys work HARD. They may have more days off, but they're often doing 5 leg days in crusty old 737s. I'd say go to AA if you have 30 yrs left. Lots of options. Plus you never know if that Sugar Mama might trade ya in for a younger model down the road!

If days off are more important than money go to whatever Airline has a more flexible trip dropping policy. Is it easy to drop to a minimum schedule at American? What about Southwest? What difference does your initial trip award make if you drop down to however many days a month you want.
I am not familiar with the ins and outs of each airlines policy regarding dropping down to a minimum schedule but I recommend you check this out, of course this can change with the next contract but since it is contractual it can not change unless the Pilots agree to it.
As far as not liking 4 day trips - don't assume what you get today today will be what is offered in 5 years, next year or even next month - Bid packages tend to change very frequently, especially with PBS.

Is that 17-20 off on narrow or wide body fleets?
Yes, I would certainly drop down days or drop trips sometimes "if possible" to be home with the kids more. I could quit and do something else, but It's nice to still have a 6 figure job we could fall back on if ever needed. Unpredictable world.
