However, that "disgrace of a union" (as you put it) went to management to rectify the situation. It was the union that came up with the plan to fix their seniority based off of the Transition Agreement statement that "all pilots hired after the merger" (us third-listers) "will be junior to the pilots of both pre-merger lists." They reordered the list to put the West guys back where they belong.
It was the company that screwed up their seniority initially, but it was that "disgrace of a union" that made it right... Believe me, I'm no fan of our union, but they did do some things right....
Now the interesting question is what happens to the West guys that took recall to the East? Do they have to go back West or risk losing their place on the West list (get a new DoH based on East recall)? That seems a bit harsh considering a bunch bought houses and moved across the country to take recall to the East. That would be a costly move, just to get moved back East again in the next several years (after the AA merger finishes). Or will the company make a deal with USAPA to let them stay East since we're so close (relatively) to a final settlement to all of this?

It's on the website. USAPA argued that all third listers should be furloughed before anyone hired before them on east or west. They lost it. Had they won I don't think any west pilots would have been furloughed at all, or at least not as many and the would have been recalled quickly.
I thought this was the basis for the original ordering of west furloughs going east. I was surprised that their seniority was corrected.
