Mesa CA here. A bunch of us are pretty sick of where we are with the shenanigans JO is pulling on us. What I USED to like about Mesa was there used to be plenty of reserves, and I could drop trips or parts of trips anytime I wanted. What is it like there in that regard? Plenty of reserves for dropping? And is it like Mesa used to be where you can drop parts of trips that you don't want? I understand some airlines only allow you to drop entire trips or nothing at all. TIA!

Our "trips" here are single day, not multi day pairings. Not sure if that answers your question or not. I routinely drop trips all the time. I'm in a larger base though so it might be easier for me than for someone in a base with only one airplane.

Plenty of reserves????? No sir... That's too expensive. My experience is that you can drop trips occasionally if you happen to work on one of the 7 days a month they allow a drop. But, being 100% day trips, the need to drop an entire trip for just some schedule conflict is rare since you're home either by 2pm or come to work at 2pm.

BTW...you're just now tired of JO shenanigans?

PIT on the FO side has had literally every day of the month for the past 3 months or so available for drop, and reserves rarely get used (company wide I bet it's well less than 50% of your reserve days you get used, varies widely depending on fleet and base). We're (PIT) probably overstaffed on FO's though. Basic answer to this is: It probably varies a lot with your base, and time of year.

But... more importantly... I'm 99% sure you'd have a much better qol here than you do at Mesa (IF YOU LIVE IN BASE). my 2 cents.

It is a different mindset here. The usual stress of travel, and multi day trips does not exist. At my last job I would get so ****ed when I got a 4-day trip that overlapped with an important event. I would try to drop it, trade it, etc. If unsuccessful, I was screwed… or using sick time.

At Allegiant, when I was junior and my seniority couldn’t hold a specific day off, I bid for the shortest turn during the most convenient time of the day. Because I am home every day, it’s not the most important thing to get a specific day off, at least for me. It’s more important to get a specific show time and trip length. Working on a day you have plans isn’t as big a deal here.

I’m in a large base and I can usually drop 2-3 days per month, maybe more in slow months. However, with 19-20 days off a month, I am usually looking forward to getting in the saddle!

The ability to drop trips varies widely by base and seat. In my current base, you could drop every day if you want. In many other bases, you wouldn't be able to drop anything.

If you are in a small base with no spares, you are only going to get used on reserve if someone calls in sick. I have talked to 80 guys in some bases that are getting used almost every day on reserve.

Thanks, guys! How would you say things are at SFB or PIE as far as being able to hold a line? How long would it take a new hire to get either of those two bases?

I'm a FO in PIE on the 80. I was hired a year ago, and am still on reserve. I suspect that after the Airbus transition it might be easier to get into PIE, but right now I know there are people waiting for a spot. Don't count on it right out of training.
