FedEx has plenty of competition in the cockpit labor pool, said aviation consultant Kit Darby of KitDarby.com.
Major airlines will hire 3,000 to 4,000 pilots this year, with Delta, United and American expected to hire 750 to 1,000 each, Darby said. Compare that to 2009, when 30 pilots were hired in the recession's depths, Darby said.
"This is a shortage like we've never seen before," Darby said of the industrywide hiring effort.
He doesn't think big companies like FedEx will have trouble attracting pilots. "They are one of the top pay and benefits companies in America."
Last October, FedEx Express' 4,300 pilots accepted a six-year contract with industry-leading pay in most job classifications. The first-year increase brought FedEx pilot pay to more than $257,000 a year on average.
Airline representatives told the GAO a downsized U.S. military is supplying fewer pilots to commercial airlines. The military, which pays pilots to train, supplied 70 percent of pilots before 2001, but the number has declined to about 30 percent, the GAO was told.
Dyer said the military once accounted for as much as 85 percent of FedEx's pilots.

What's interesting is that it's largely a crock of $hit.....Kit Darby still living out his 1980's FAPA pilot shortage fantasies. Let's put it this way: Wanting to leave is one thing....actually getting an offer is another thing.

I'd say he speaks from a bit more experience than most of the participants here, has a flying resume that's a pilot's wet-dream. And he's stayed involved in the industry so knows the current situation. But doubt the pilot shortage if you wish.
Kit Darby was the president of Aviation Information Resources (AIR, Inc.) from 1989 to 2009. He was a B737-300/800 and B717 Simulator and Ground Instructor for Boeing in Atlanta, GA from 2007-2014, and is currently an ATP-CTP instructor for Delta Global Services and ATP Flight School. A retired B767 captain with United Airlines, Mr. Darby has interviewed 21 times with 17 different airlines and worked with four majors and one national airline since 1978.
Kit’s flight experience includes 20,000+ hours total time, 10,000 hours jet time. ATP with B717, B737, B727, DC-8, and B757/767 type ratings, flight/instrument and flight engineer instructor, commercial instrument helicopter pilot, plus military instructor/instrument examiner ratings in two helicopters and five fixed-wing multi-engine aircraft.

What about the 4 year degree requirement? Had a friend who couldn't get past the first page of the app. Too bad, he's highly qualified.
