To add to what's been said...

Plan on being put in the VBD base until you can bid out. I noticed that in the last new hire class only a few were awarded something else. If your crazy enough to "want" the VBD base then bid the -80. The good news is that because the base is pretty well staffed there haven't been as many involuntary TDYs on the -80 side. On the AB side there is no VBD/homeless base which means people are pulled and TDY'd out of seniority around the system. So there are AB people from BLI going to FLL and pretty soon I wouldn't be surprised to see SFB and PIE guys going to OAK irregardless of seniority.

I'm guessing you haven't flown a full summer here yet.

There will be a ton of "opportunities" for capt and FO to go sit TDY in all kinds of glorious places-from mid May to mid Sept. Last year they attempted to make pilots bunk together in MYR.

It's non-stop fun, and I expect both the 80 and AB to get to join in on these "opportunities" this year, so getting awarded the Bus won't necessarily protect you.

Approximately where would a 30 year old fall in a new hire class? Are bases and equipment to choose from provided before class or during indoc? How easily can you transfer to other bases?
Are all reserve lines built to 10 days off?
Approximately what percentage of trips are day trips? Can you typically expect to be home every night?
I think I read somewhere that you do not have a probationary period. Is that true?

I'm sure I will come up with more questions.

The homeless base is as described, except you can be forced in to as a newhire, if they decide those are the only openings. It's permanent TDY. Although junior people assigned a regular base still also get TDY'd. Depends on the month, the base, and the equipment.

If you live near one of our regular bases, it might be ok. If you are going to try and commute, good luck. The schedules are not very good for commuting.

Junior schedule depends if you are in domicile or TDY. I think it varies wildly, but I am sitting something like 3 days of reserve and two flights a week -ish as a new hire on the bus while TDY. Some new guys in base have 100hr/month schedules.

Homeless base is basically a permanent TDY. You bid for it, so you can get 24/7 per diem. Great for single folks. If no one bids it, it will be awarded based on seniority or lack thereof. If you are awarded a base, you can still be forced TDY, but that seems to be a little less common. About 10 pilots get forced out of base against their wishes each month.

APC pay scale is accurate.

Pay during training is now min guarantee. ($41/hr x 70). Hotel is provided (single occupancy) along with one rental car per 2 people once you enter the sim phase. Surprisingly, the company uses rather nice hotels (Marriott, Hyatt, etc).

I'm not sure about the med insurance or regional stuff as I am mil. Perhaps someone else can chime in on those points.

You don't get a choice. You may be assigned to the 75 and go to HI for a long time. You might get the AB or you might get the 80. You could just as easily be stuck out west or stuck out east. There is no way to know beforehand, and the openings change constantly. A base can go through a huge growth spurt, then not have any openings for a very long time and you will be unable to get into that base. You are rolling the dice.

Some of your prior questions have already been answered but:

1.5 hr callout

RSV lines can be anything but min 10 OFF, though this includes senior line holders who get reserve days forced onto they're schedule. Slow months you may get more, but don't plan on it.

Yes we're all technically on probation all the time.

Bases are provided during class but prepare for frustration. Our class was supposed to get our base assignments week 2 but we didn't actually get them until week 4. We didn't know our sim schedules til one week prior to finishing ground school. Which was a big deal because some people had up too 5 weeks off before sim, others started right away. Lot of stressed and worked up people in my class.

It's hard to say where a 30 year old would fall in class. The age ranges vary widely from one class to the next.

It's hard to say how hard it is to base transfer. Depends on what equipment you are on, and where you want to go. "Official" bids now happen every quarter, although there is still a lot of backroom wheeling and dealing to get moves outside of this.

All pure reserve lines are built to 10 days off.

All trips (as of right now, and not counting charters) are day trips, except on the 757. They have some overnights. If you live in base, you are normally home every night for right now, except in the 757.

Everyone is on probation all the time. At least until a Teamster contract gets passed.

You live where ever you want, as long as it's in the Continental United States. They buy you an airline ticket from your home to your TDY assignment. At or near the end of that month of TDY, or the beginning of the next one, they buy you an airline ticket from wherever you are, to your next TDY location. Repeat this every month.

Last I knew, the official position on you going home while you are in the homeless base was going to be your problem. They are not going to help you go back and forth.

Also, your ability to take a weeks vacation while in the homeless base is somewhat questionable. Currently, if a pilot from a regular base has vacation during a month they should have been on TDY, they skip that person and move to the next. It's too hard for them to figure it out. Not sure how they will handle it for people on permanent TDY.
