I agree the rates at some of the legacy carriers are awful, but hourly pay isn't the only factor. I believe when it comes to areas like rig/duty, LTD, medical, etc. those those things are nonexistent in the Allegiant contract. It is a purdy airplane though.

I think silkbra has it right. But in addition the other rocket scientist Delta Kings should maybe look at economics 101 a bit closer. Don't compare F/O and Capt rates because this is apples and oranges. Delta's last Capt is a minimum 12 year employee. Allegiant has 4 year (and hopefully for this former AE Capt) or less upgrades. So let's look at the pay at 4 year Allegiant Capt MD80 and a 12 year F/O at Delta! Looks like Allegiant has 8 years of better pay than Delta! We need not even mention AA.

Quickest way to command are the smaller operators such as Allegiant or Virgin America. True pay may be less. However 5 year employee with Allegiant who has 1 year command under their is more marketable than a 7 year DAL or AA pilot who has zero command time. Captains with at least 500 of PIC have opportunites move on and take advantages of other opportunities round the world as a DEC with better pay, terms and conditions.
A 7 year DAL or AA pilot who has been pulling the gear has the hopes, at best, as a F/O with EK, and a view from the right side for another 5 years.
There are some exceptions to the rule however, such as Qatar and Air Asia have hired DECs without time on type.

As of right now the 757 guys are home every night. They are based in LAS and do turns just like the MD80. When Hawaii starts up they are talking about doing a "heavy" crew where you fly one way and deadhead the other, so they will still be home every night. Although most people realize that if overnights are to start at Allegiant the 757 is where they will be.
