Alright, rant over back to the original question.
Looks like they know how to keep their costs low. All paper tickets with no scanners at the gates, manual head counts(Is this how they do it everywhere?), outsourced ground handling at stations(not all), mediocre pay. There is also the fact that service is fairly limited. I've seen some places with service only twice a week. Often when I'm in LAS, they have a lot of planes just sitting.

Please don't take this as insults or flamebaiting. They are just my observations as to how the cost structure stays low. I can not guarantee accuracy. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

Planes sit Tuesdays and Saturdays for the most part in LAS. This is due to the fact that all but 2 in the entire fleet are owned and don't need to be flown on low yield days. Yet another way to make money instead of bleeding it.

OK, that makes sense. There is certainly greater flexibility when the planes are owned.

Johnso29:
You are right. They do outsource ground handling where they have to because some of the small airports they work out of require that. Also, I know the pay looks bad, but it's not all that bad when the upgrade time is only 1year and a half to 2 years. I am making more money now than when I was at a legacy carrier because starting pay is slightly higher at Allegiant. At the legacy, my upgrade time was like 11 to 12 years, or something like that versus 2 years max here. I will make more at Allegiant, of course with more responsibility. Also, we are a fairly new company. You better believe the pilots will be working on something once the upgrade time starts slowing down and they start catching up with the rest of the industry. Also, no union. The CEO fully supports the pilots in their decisions. Oh, and did I mention he's a genius. The guy just knows what he's doing, and he cares about the employees. The rest of his management team is just like him. They all seem to be on the same page and they work well together. Just my observation and what I've seen so far in the short time I've been here. Just a pleasant place to work.

LMEN,

Glad you're happy. Nothing I said was intended as mean. I hope it didn't come off that way. The outsourced ground handling is something that is practiced by Legacies as well. I'm also sure it's nice to be home every night.

Happy Holidays

A note on the outsourcing of ground services... We fly into a destination anywhere from 2 to 4 times per week on average, with 1 flight per day. It just doesn't make much sense to hire our own people for those stations. Where we have more frequency, we will hire our own people when we can and it makes sense.

Being a Legacy pilot, I'm sure you're aware that having your own people work a flight doesn't guarantee quality service. Frankly, I find better treatment at most of our contracted stations.

I agree, if you're only going there 1-2 times a week I think it's next to impossible to justify not contracting it out.
