Sounds like good news we don't seem to get too much of that anymore. I may have to put this one down as a possibility after my military carreer is up. I see the flying out of St. Pete regularly.

They are doing well for now. If you are based where you live, its a great deal. Load factors so far this year are good.

Don't most "Coasties" go Southwest or B6?

Allegiant and Southwest were quoted as the only two airlines that could turn a profit at $110/barrel.

It's nice to see an airline be proactive instead of reactive in all decisions as well.

The Raleigh Snooze & Disturber (N & O) today (Apr.5th) announced:

The Skybus decision (to completely shut down) follows news that Allegiant Air, a low fare carrier that began flying out of GSO last spring, would end service to the airport May 31. Allegiant officials blamed high oil prices and less-than-desired passenger numbers.

It does not sound good with Aloha and ATA closing the doors and now Skybus pulling the plug. The revenue generated by most low cost carriers simply will not provide the operating income to offset the high fuel costs, labor and general operating expenses. It's unfortunate that so many have lost jobs and the outlook is not very bright, especially with spirialing crude prices.

Best of luck Mates.

I'm curious how pulling out of GSO months ago and my post above yours about being basically the only airline after SWA to post a profit with high oil prices creates anything dire at Allegiant. With the impending SWA fuel hedge diminished, that leaves only Allegiant left standing.

All in all it actually sounds pretty rosy there.

Well, with the exception of the abysmal pay, and $1.00 per diem...

This announcement is a couple months old. It was an interesting move and probably a smart one since our stock has slowly regained value ever since; it is currently the highest priced airline stock in the country. They could have raised fares to cover the increased cost of fuel, but they chose to stick to the original business plan and discontinue some of their longest range flights which were less profitable due to more fuel burn. They reallocated the aircraft to other cities. We just announced new service from Santa Barbara and Monterey, CA to LAS with more to come. These new short routes should offset the loss of revenue from the discontinued longer routes. I'm not sure why they don't just raise fares a little, but at least they don't fly at a loss like some other airlines do.

Yeah, pay and per diem do need to increase; they will as we grow. We're small and comparatively new, so it takes time.

In light of recent events, the Allegiant guys may very well be happy to be at least getting a paycheck.
