Why or why not Allegiant

oh it’s certainly doable to only spend a couple nights a month in a hotel once you get some seniority at a legacy; but wide body FO is a senior position that’s probably gonna take a decade at least to achieve. I totally understand why many are willing to suck it up for 10-15 years to get that ideal legacy gig. But I also understand why some (not “many” but “some” pilots) don’t want to sacrifice 10-15 years of commuting and hotel hopping to achieve that wide body FO lifestyle.
I wouldn’t recommend Allegiant to most pilots, but for a subset of pilots it’s the ideal flying gig. I’ve always been upfront on here: NEVER try to commute; FL is not for new hires because reserve there is torture; try to live close enough to the airport that you can pick up the occasional open trip and eventually a VFN.
now feel free to call me a management tool - that’s what most ppl on APC call me when I talk objectively about this place. Some get real upset when I don’t follow the mob and try to scare everybody away from this place.

No; you’re right. For the - comparatively speaking - small class sizes at Allegiant a “small subset” is enough. You might double-check the legacy picture - it’s not 10-15 years if you’re willing to sit widebody reserve & for that matter a couple guys I know who live in base at Southwest work the system & are gone maybe 5 nights. You have to make it a priority where Allegiant it’s just the way it is of course.

I just had a 777 new hire FO in my jumpseat the other day. He was assigned widebody FO in indoc, and flies a couple times a month, max, on reserve.
There are plenty of day trips on the narrowbodies. Those take some seniority to hold, but not as much as you would think with all the hiring and growth.

Also, just because we do day trips now doesn't mean that will remain forever. The question really comes down to what do you want out of your career?
Another thing to consider is how our contract negotiations are going right now.....Not well at all. I suspect if we dont have an AIP soon, things are really going to get nasty. So please be prepared.
So really what is it you want? You wont have many choices on what and where you fly. So you better be happy with being home every night. For me, it is. YMMV.

I see this all the time. It’s similar to someone saying they want to be a cop, but nights, weekends, and holidays don’t work for their family.
Don’t pass up what could potentially be a vastly better career at xyz because you don’t want to stay in a hotel. With seniority you can do anything you want, you just need to put the time in to earn that right. There’s also nothing to say that Allegiant won’t change their entire business model and shift to a trip mix.

And the argument that “you” have to put in the time to earn seniority belies an underlying fallacy that I’d wager to bet has wrecked a good number of airline industry families. The reality is that for the typical 35-or-older pilot, “you” are not the one putting in the sacrifice. Your spouse is. You're watching Netflix in the hotel while your spouse deals with sick kids, broken furnaces, and household chores; all while managing his or her own career. SHE or HE is making the hardest sacrifice.
I’m pretty sure the OP knows he’d earn more at Delta, so let’s just stick to answering what he actually wanted to know.
