Oh that part is interesting and definitely makes it hard to glean an estimate based on past trends.

Is that due to growth, or attrition?

Growth only. The airline doubled in size pilot wise in just 5 years. We just do not have the attrition like the legacy carriers do right now. It's hard to gauge too because we do not have a list of pilot ages published anywhere.

A lot of pilots here have their own side gigs going too and many are happy to stay First Officer with best schedules you can imagine being in the top 20% of FO's etc..

If you come here, its not going to be a traditional airline job and in many ways that is both good and bad. We have a lot of work to do on this next contract. For many pilots, this next contract will likely be their last contract age wise I believe.

PIE is getting some new flying but its really not growing at all. So as a new hire while you might expect to upgrade to Captain in about 5 years, it will be in a less desirable base. You could be looking at 10-15 year upgrade in some of the more desirable bases.
I agree with this and it's how the model of day trips works since you eventually run out of space to park planes when you have no layovers. Once a new base is opened then the trip pairings are pulled from the legacy bases to keep them from logistically being maxed out. New flying is added to the older bases to replace what was offset. Rinse and repeat. Over the long term the older bases are growing significantly in terms of routes but not crews. The day trips are very nice but this is the other side of the coin to an all day trip airline.

Simple truth for those hired in the future, barring a very long wait, you will not upgrade into any of the 20ish bases currently available.

There's a pretty long waiting list of current employees trying to upgrade there. Pretty much the whole FO list lives in SoCal, so they all want to upgrade at LAX. Getting in as an FO probably won't be too difficult.

To get right out of training no, the bottom third of the FOs are very junior. Forget about moving up from there tho, let alone upgrading.

What would shake things up would be a SAN base.

Thanks all. Yeah I meant as a CA. I think you guys said there should be FO vacancies for LAX this summer assuming they weren't gobbled up by recalls

You can ride it out as an FO, or move to whatever flavor of the week they come up with for their next base. The only way I’d see this changing is if they decide to expand by flying out of multiple airports in a city such as MCO/SFB, TPA/PIE, etc.
This is likely the future for upgrades in our big bases. We just entered Sky Harbor (PHX), if that strategy proves profitable then we might be able to see some growth in IWA, and maybe try the same strategy in FL with TPA, PIE, RSW, etc.
