Default Switching Base Out Of Training

I start on the 1/10 class. Looking to hold IND out of training. CVG is backup. Has anyone been able to get it recently? Also if I don’t get it how soon can you switch bases?

Not trying to be Debbie Downer, but you’re not getting either one of those right out of training. New vacancies come out approximately once a month, but that’s not a guarantee. You’re all but assured of getting ATW, FNT, or DSM initially.

Last class to be awarded IND was 10/25 (2 slots). IND currently has about 4 FOs trying to go elsewhere and about 4 trying to bid into it. In the last bid, one FO successfully bid out, but two more senior FOs bid in.

Unless they grow the base (e.g. add another plane) it could take a while to hold. Also, even if there are vacancies, the company doesn’t have to offer them to new hires. Instead you’ll be offered FNT or ATW to ensure staffing for those bases (at least for a couple of months or so out of training) until you can bid somewhere else. So if you were awarded FNT out of training, but then were awarded a new base in the next system bid, that would take effect 4 months later (in general).

On a more positive note, there is quite a bit of movement at present and if/when a new base opens, that could create some additional movement. Also if your training is delayed, that would reduce the time spent in your initial base assignment.

Not so sure about CVG - it’s a bigger base than IND, but I believe the only recent vacancies have been backfills.

What’s the best advice for getting a base that’s not desired out of training? Move there?

What happens if you are based somewhere that has seasonal flying and you are at the bottom when the busy season ends? Are you displaced? TDY somewhere else?

Involuntary TDY is the most likely scenario. People do voluntarily bid for TDY though, so while it’s very possible you’d be sent somewhere else, it isn’t a forgone conclusion. You’re also provided a hotel room and 24/7 per diem - which is why some choose to bid for it - and in some cases it can go quite senior.

You’d only be displaced if your base closed, or if another base closed and you were bumped out of your base by someone more senior.
