I'm a 20+ Alaska pilot and I expect to lose a few numbers but I also expect some sort of fence to prevent those few guys from bidding in to my base. I also expect I won't be able to bid the Bus in SFO for a few years. Maybe 5 years and by then I expect those few senior VX pilots will be retired. Of course if the Buses go away quickly, that changes everything.

I use to think the same way but recently learned something about the fence concept. What if we have fences and as soon as the SLI was done the company makes a equipment / base change? - LAX is now a FiFi base or ANC is now a FiFi base? All Boeings move out, all FiFi's move in and Alaska Natives now have to move or commute with their equipment because they are fence out from flying FiFi for years. It would seem that fences can be dangerous. Food for thought.

Why is it only the VX guys are up in arms about fences? Whats the harm in trying to keep what little QOL we have for a few years until the fleet plan gets sorted out. Who wants to spend 2 1/2 months in our school house to switch narrowbody aircraft for the same pay?
Alaska maybe has 5 guys who commute from the bay area. How many VX guys live in the NW? For the record I was an ‘01 hire so even if there was no fence I doubt it impacts me as much as it would our junior guys. I for one don’t want to see these guys crapped on anymore than they already have. Not looking to bicker or throw verbal darts. I would rather save that for the bags of sh*t on Angle Lake in 2020.

For the same pay, I'm not convinced people are going to go through a full training event if they can help it. The only exceptions are the VX locals to SEA, PDX, and the AS locals to SFO. So that's what, maybe 70 guys total out of 2,700?

There may be a few just to get a free type rating on their ticket. Seen that before.

Who wants to go through training for months for the same pay? I would. I'm sick of the 737. I look forward to a little more comfort in my last few years. It's not that I relish the thought of flying the bus, I just need a change.
As for base closures, I think fences can encompass more than aircraft type and position. They can address domicile as well.

Fact Alaska pilots get nothing from merger except modest raise via JCBA. Look at ALPA contract comparison. Virgin got huge gains across the board, plus a CBA which they didn't have before. Is it to much to ask that a 20+ year guy's hired in 1996 not be junior to a 2006/2007 hire. DOH prevents a total windfall given to the Virgin group. I'd hate to see this place turn into AWA/US AIR. No one want labor discord..... I would hope.
