There were 3 that didn't make it through training in the last couple months due to unsatisfactory performance. Even after obtaining extra OE multiple times they still weren't up to par and were shown the door. The managers likely see the 1,000 hrs turbine as a benchmark to those that are successful at going through training. All that said, we have a serious recruiting and retention issue, so it seems like a double edged sword to me.

I have 13,000 hours, 15 years in an RJ, 10 years as a Captain and former LCA, Master's degree. Haven't flown in 5 years because I took a civilian non-flying job. Got my first class medical last week, and going to fly around in a piston airplane at my local airport to get current. Live 18 miles from LAX. 61 years old (but look much younger&#128521.

Do I have a chance?

My opinion only, but I think you have way more than a chance. They have hired men in their early 60's before and that was even before there was a "pilot shortage". As you know, the wheel can sometimes turn slowly. You may be the best guy in the stack, but it may take a while to find you in the stack, so don't delay on getting current and getting your paperwork into the system.

Probably, they know you won't leave so 4-ish years is more than they can count on for younger FO's.

Default What is driving away young pilots?

In your opinion what is driving away young FOs from Alaska? The new contract looked like it resolved a lot of QoL issues. When I showed the payscales to my United buddy his response was, "those are pretty good pay rates, especially first year." So what is it exactly?

1. Lack of retirements.
2. Lack of international/widebody flying.

The younger you are, the more that matter but even if you're 50+ the big-3 retirements make a huge difference.

Folks,

The answer for any narrowbody only carrier is a 20 year scale where year 12 is industry (AA/DL/UA) TOS narrowbody rate and where year 20 is industry TOS widebody CA rate.

It no longer matters how big the plane is as the E175 will be a mainline aircraft in the not to distant future. This is about having the appropriate license to operate a transport category aircraft in 121 operations. The alternative will be a slow extinction.

Cheers - Rob.

full disclosure: I'm on the outside looking in, but if you live in domicile, is seniority somewhat mitigated? Also, lots of companies are starting to use 737s and A321s for international flights. Is the lack of WB for the pay or the lifestyle? I would think flying into sweet spots in central america and lots to Hawaii would be pretty fun for an Alaska pilot
