No one debates the step-up leaving Skywest for Alaska. No doubt the hourly pay is better and prob the 401K is better…Some hotels may be better….Better to come here eyes-wide-open than eyes-wide-shut….lots of cheerleaders here of all seniority ranges…cool to date a cheerleader…not cool to get life and career advice from one

What airline would Alaska be in par with (same level)? For example better than ULCC Spirit, Allegiant, Frontier, cargo and or ACMI. Asking for a friend.
Thanks

At this point it’s probably below Spirit and Frontier, pay might be a couple dollars more at Alaska but the work rules and quality of life is what kills you at Alaska. Reserve rules are probably worse than many regionals nowadays.
The management at Alaska has been bragging about our 5 year upgrade which will be rapidly increasing as the senior Airbus pilots get displaced to the Boeing. Pretty sure you can upgrade anywhere faster other than maybe Southwest. Alaska will probably be closer to 6-7 years for upgrade eventually and that’s still assuming that 2-3 hundred FOs continue to bypass.

“Upgrade” is the worst measure of an airlines quality…As a new hire at Alaska I flew with guys who caught a 3.5 year upgrade. I made lt in seven years but was downgraded for 3..Pilots right behind me waited 12 years for the first possible upgrade. Structurally, with a single fleet type we will settle in to a 7-10 year upgrade cycle.

This is true, I guess my point was that in addition to being better options for pilots than Alaska, United, Delta, American, etc. all have shorter upgrade times on comparable equipment.

Perhaps so, but with the MEDIAN home in King County selling for $828k, it does give you some idea as to how long it will take you to earn enough to have a good house in a good neighborhood with a good school district.

First year FO pay sure isn’t going to hack it.

It's a pretty bad place to work. No kidding.

I’ve started the interview process I figure I’d give 121 a try after 6 years 135 in bush AK. Is the QOL and lifestyle at AS so terrible that I’m making a mistake? “Pretty bad place to work” is quite an intimidating statement

After 6 years 135 in bush AK I got the call from AS. Is QOL and lifestyle so truly unbearable that I’m making a mistake? “It's a pretty bad place to work. No kidding.“ is quite an intimidating statement. I still live near ANC and don’t plan on moving. Would it be so terrible with an ANC base?

I would start with asking you what your expectations are. What do you want out of your next job? Are you okay with reserve for a while as an FO? Will you be happy flying only one aircraft type for the rest of your career? How many and what days off do you want? Do you need a lot of schedule flexibility? If your needs are low in these categories, you will be fine here. If you camp out in the right seat, your life will improve at a pretty good pace. If you want to upgrade, that will take some time and then you will be on reserve for a long time. Again, things to consider. Our next contract will improve things some but base your decision on current work conditions.
