Alaska Air Hiring
#6331
Generally curious besides the bases how will you sell AS to a prospective new hire? I’m confident y’all will get the contract you rightfully deserve but I feel it looks weird going to a place with a strike in order. Then again we’re airline pilots and complaining is what we’re best at.

But to answer your question, only a new contract will move the ball. And even then, I don't think it'll move the attrition line much. Even if we get the ALPA ask and we get 320/hr, why stay here for 320/hr and be permanent 737 with 5 bases on the west coast only, when you could go to the big 3 and get 325/hr+ and various bases throughout the country, not to mention widebodies with even higher pay? I've said it before, a new contract will not fix the structural issues of what a career here entails: geographically limited bases, single fleet, domestic/N.A. only, and narrowbody only max pay.

I didn't say sell. I said to answer legit questions that are being asked.

And I forgot movement/retirements. That’s another structural issue at AS. The VX group was young. Joining today, I think we have about 700 retirements in the next 10 years. The big 3 get rid of half their list (or more) in the same timeframe. Seniority matters, movement matters, retirements, etc.

At jetBlue:
"About 300 hired YTD and 115 have quit/retired/deceased. About 4500 pilots total on the list."
At Spirit:
"From our union, YTD through April, we’ve hired 284 pilots, and we’ve lost 162 (141 to other airlines, the other 21 are retirements, etc…)."
Compared to AS:
352 hired YTD about 84 quit, 21 retired = 105 gone. About 3350 on the total list.
Pretty similar numbers.
