Just got the email from SR asking me to apply to Horizon. I'm really not into this bait and switch stuff. I would have preferred they never called me about "Alaska" in the first place. I am perfectly capable of applying with out the helpful suggestion.

Just curious if y'all are watching the seniority integration thread... Why would you want to work here with so many better options out there? Seriously?

Honestly, I don't think I do. I was really just posting for other people to hear about my experience. I know there is a very strong cult following for AS and I hope they get in and are very happy. But man....this is a multi-billion dollar company, how can their hiring process be so disorganized?

True, there are many better options out there currently, both monetarily and career progression-wise but like Swingline alluded to, some of us fall into the "cult following" category.

I grew up in AK and have loved AS ever since I was a little kid, and I'm sure those that grew up or live in the PNW feel the same. AS is a different airline with a different culture and is one of the few airlines that actually gives a darn about their customers. As an employee, that's gotta feel good. Plus the west coast bases are a huge draw.

So yes, there are "better" choices out there, but none that would make me (or any of us in the cult) as happy as being able to fly for Alaska. Not saying I would turn down an offer if one of the bigger guys came knocking, but I'd still keep applying at AS even if that were the case. Crazy to think about for some I know, but I'd rather feel happy and fulfilled at my job rather than chasing the money and upgrade. I'm sure there's people who feel this way about other airlines as well. Everybody's situation is different.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to finish off the rest of this Kool-Aid....

I'd say as any airline is smaller it's a lot easier to ensure you "give a darn about their customers". I work for a legacy and care about my customers and pretty much just about every employee that I work with (save a few) cares about the customers as well. But the larger workpool makes it a little harder to identify and cull the bad apples. Our FA's are not unionized though, so it doesn't take much documented "bad customer service" to allow mgmt to send them packing.

Lastly, with all the hiring going on, the west coast is junior for the legacy airlines (well except for AA but you can't get on there unless your a flow through anyway).

So, in summary I'd just warn not to become myopic in your airline career progression and idolize a certain company for a perceived childhood fascination. Best advice I heard when I was a teenager: it's ill advised to love ANYTHING that can't love you back.

Very wise advice. I know a pilot who fits right in with your description above. He's bypassed UPS, Atlas and a number of other great jobs because of his childhood fascination.

None of us are getting any younger. Unrequited love is one of the saddest states of being.

Great advice! I love the quote too.

I guess it's hard to have the 8 year old kid inside look through your 30 year old eyes and see what's really going on out there. I'll happily go elsewhere and embrace the company but I'll always get a little smile whenever I see that Eskimo flying around.

Anyway, back on track.....
