Virgin is great group of friendly people who seem (from my observation) to enjoy there jobs and life in general. Of course, if you are an ass hat, and also from the military, they probably wont like you. But it's not likely the military service.
You may not appreciate the difference between those who are retired military and those leaving active duty. Most companies love the "Hire a vet" public affairs campaign. Retired is ideal. No further military obligations or committment. Clean break. Some companies may be hesitant to hire too many military who are not retired and may continue military service in the Guard/Reserve component.
The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) can really create challenges for an employer to assure an all volunteer military.
Short story: It can be expensive and painful to lose drilling military pilots with unpredictable military commitments. Impacts the daily line operations. These are facts. The smaller the compnay, the greater the impact. Naive to believe that it is not on the HR and Chief Pilot calculus at airlines. Too many drilling military employees and the unpredictability factor is more apparent. Very nuanced, but it is a real bias that USERRA is designed to prevent. Department of Labor Veterans' Employment &Training Service exist to help enforce USERRA.
Airline management personnel promote more USERRA relief. Stricter regulations, etc on Guard/Reserve pilots employed in the airlines. Not a surprise if now and again a military pilot in these circumstances may form an opinion that the bias is active at various places.
My disclaimer is I have no idea on VA. I do not know of any airline currently avoiding military who may continue to serve. The folks I know from VA are great people and my comments are specific only to your original comment regarding the 'mindset' and how it occurs.

I know several who swore after JB was about 5 yrs into service that they avoided NON RETIRED military due to the fact that most would continue in the reserves and hamper the JB operation.

Retired military, what's not to love? Compliant, experienced military who comes with his/her own medical benefits.....

Has VX started ETOPS proving runs yet? I thought I heard (not sure) a Redwood call-sign coasting from Oakland center over the weekend.

Yeah, 1, 2, 3, 4 day trips. No CDOs really to speak of. You could do a redeye, get day rest, and then the evening flight back. But it's mostly transcons so you don't CDO.
