During the UAL/CAL SLI the UAL side had offered a few categories a one month leave. Someone at CAL saw this and tried to make a claim that United was overstaffed by 1,700 pilots because that was the total number of pilots that those categories had. They used that 1,700 number in the SLI to effectively propose that in addition the furloughees being stapled, the 1,700 bottom active pilots should be stapeled because they were "extra pilots", which resulted in CAL ALPA proposing a SLI with the bottom 2,900 United pilots be stapeled behind even the CAL furloughees.

A total of 27 pilots were actually awarded monthly COLAs.

During a 15 hour flight on a 787, requiring 4 pilots, almost 7 hours of that is spent sleeping in the bunk. If you split it into multiple breaks you can make it so that you never spend more then 3.5 hours in the cockpit at one time, which is not possible on a domestic transcon. Also a 30 hour 3 or 4 day trip is far more productive than any 737 trips.
